When should I be concerned? Help

I am 27 days out and I am at the end of my 1st week of soft foods.

I have been trying to get in protein and fluids.

I never seem to have enough room in my stomach for anything.

For the past two days I've had the same thing happen at dinner.

Here's the scenario:

Morning 4 oz of coffee with 1/4 cup whole milk (takes me an hour to drink this without pain)
Then after that I have a 1/2 protein shake/smoothie with 1/3 banana for 10 g protein (another hour)
Then I spend the next 2 hours sipping a 16oz gatorade ( that's how long it takes without pain)
Then I wait an hour and eat 2-3 tbs of cottage cheese. (This takes only 5-10 minutes but I feel the restriction for about 10 minutes after)
Then I wait an hour and sip another 16 oz gatorade (This takes me another 2 hours)
Then I wait an hour (while I'm cooking dinner)
Then I eat 3 oz of talapia steamed in chicken broth (I chew really well and it takes about 15 minutes)

Here's where the trouble starts. As soon as I finish eating the fish I start having bad pain, I get nausea and burp alot, tonight I even threw up some foamy yuk (sorry, best I could do to describe)

It has taken 1/2 hour for the pain to go away.

Now I'm concerned that there is something wrong.

If this is normal what can I do to get in more protein and fluids. Seems like there is not enough time in the day to get in everything I need right now.

If this is not normal...any suggestions on what is wrong?

Thanks
Donna

There is no way I will be able to drink anything for another hour without pain.

I'm still pre op, but think you may be eating too much.  I believe that's where the foamies and pain come from.  I am curious as to why you are drinking gatorade, which is loaded with sugar instead of drinking water or a protein drink?

sorry, It's G2. I don't do much sugar even before surgery.

I think you should consult your nutritionist and your surgeon.  I never experienced pain such as you're describing - and when I feel full, I just stop eating.  Don't be afraid to call your doctor - that's what they're there for.

My guess - 3 oz of tilapia is too much.  Cut it back to 1 oz then wait and see how you feel, then try another oz.  At your time out, I could get in between 1-2 oz - couldn't do 3.

I am 27 days out too and just started solids today.  I am able to eat way more than I expected. 1 egg is no longer enough.

I recommend contacting your dr.  Also, are you diluting the gatorade?

Too much too soon would account for the pain and foamies (plus coffee is an irritant...probably not so good an idea so soon after surgery.)

I had surgery on the 1st, too, and my intake is pretty limited. I can't really take in more than about 2oz of any food, and I've given up on the idea of eating more than twice a day for now. I get my protein in by having a Premier protein shake in the morning and one in the evening. They're 11 oz and take me about 40-45 minutes to get it all down, but it takes the pressure off of me trying to get in protein at my "meals". That way, I've met my quota and anything else is a bonus. Most days I get in my liquids, (my Dr. said the protein shakes count towards my liquid). I don't know if any of that helps you, but I would definitely call the Dr. Monday morning just to get their feedback. I've only had one episode where I wasn't sick really, just terribly uncomfortable, and I think it was because I ate salmon which was probably too dense. I'm not focusing on my food at this point as much as my protein, fluids, vitamins and exercise. It's gotten a little better every day! I hope it gets much better for you soon!
Best Wishes!

Thanks to all of you.

Just reading the replys sets my mind at ease.

3 oz of talapia looks like so LITTLE, lol

The only reason I eat anything is for either the fluids or the protein. Though every once in a while I'll taste something I cooked.  If I didn't need it I would just not eat at all. I'm never hungry and that's a big change from before surgery.
And to be perfectly honest after the last two tries at eating fish, I'm scared to eat at all.

Thanks for the advise.

I had surgery the same day as you and there is no way I could eat 3 ozs of anything, even if it looks like a little. Tonight I measured out 2 ozs of rotisserie chicken, I ate until my body said NO MORE. I weighed what was left and I had 1.5 ozs left!

It is important to listen to your body, I take a break between each bite to see what my body is going to tell me.

I would also back off the coffee, replace it with something high in protein, I heat about 10 ozs of milk and add sugar free hot coco with a whole scoop of chocolate protein powder and blend it with my stick blender. It's pretty good and gives me 20 grams of protein.
