At 4 weeks out my surgeon told me to start with soft foods and to only eat 1-2 oz at most. It should be moist and take you 30 mintues to eat. You may be eating too fast.  Also, make sure your not drinking for at least 20 mintues before and 45 mintues after eating. Should you be eating solids already? Also as another post said....coffee is probably really hard on your newly operated tummy. Good luck =)

You would really benefit from replacing the gatorade with propel.  Propel is made by the same gatorade company but the sugar and sodium contents are very little compared to propel.  What you need to do is to continue taking your protein and cut down on your food intake until you are able to tolerate the food.  You should first pass these suggestions by your nutritionist.

Good luck,

I thought I was eating slowly and very little but it looks like that assessment needs to be reevaluated. Easy enough.

I have never had Propel. I drink G2, not the sugar stuff but I'm willing to try anything that is palatable to me and helps me keep hydrated.

Before surgery I had issues with dehydration ( just didn't drink much).
I often confused thirst with hunger.

I love my coffee in the morning. It does not seem to bother my stomach but I will take your advise and cut back to see if food tolerance improves.

I think part of my problem is ignorance of what to expect and the other part is watching how much and how easy my husband is eating. He has absolutely no problems getting in his fluids and proteins in food and watching him I got to thinking there was something wrong with me.

Thanks for all the support and education.

The pain, or the foamies or slime have happened to me only twice since surgery.

Once I'm sure I ate too fast because I was newly eating mushy food and it tasted so freakin good : )  20 to 30 minutes to eat such a small portion of food seems like forever.   It's really only a few bites of what and how we used to eat.

I have never eaten fast, always been a painfully slow eater... however, I could not make these tiny meals last 20 to 30 minutes.  They only way I have been able to slow my eating is with long pauses between bites.  The little bites we chew like crazy and eat still only takes moments to do.  Without really super small bites from a tiny toddler fork, I'm sure I ate too fast or too much.

The other time it happened, was just a grouchy pouch : )
I eat super slow, had that same food before without any issues, and ended up losing it immediately.   Have had it since without any issues.

Sometimes it's us causing it.. sometimes it's the grouchy tummy.

On a sidenote, I had my surgery on June 23rd, and can't eat more than 1.5 oz comfortable.  I think your tummy may be bringing back up what it doesn't have room for.  Just try eating less, and pause long pauses between small bites.  That should help : )

Ditto to what everyone said, you are eating more at a sitting than what is typically possible at your stage post-op.

1-2 ounce of fish is probably enough.  I wasn't even eating foods like that at one month post-op...

As far as the coffee goes, I started back on my 1 cup morning coffee at a few weeks post-op, and it has not been a problem, but you may need to drink less ounces of it, so it doesn't make you so full...At a month out, I made an 8 oz cup, filled in my cream, but only probably drank about 3 ounces of it, and was satisfied...

The protein shake, you should eliminate the banana for now to save more room in your tiny tummy. Bananas are very filling, and you want to concentrate on getting the protein instead from the shake.

The G2 is fine, but I just drank water for the most part.

I've never had foamies or gotten sick, so far, and I am hoping to never have that problem...but I did not move through the stages quickly and did not progress as quickly as my guidelines stated I could...I stayed on liquids for a long time, then have stayed in mostly purees & soft foods even now. Better safe than sorry....and to me, there is no rush, we have the rest of our lives to eat. LOL.
