A few more reasons to get a good VSG surgeon.

Some less experienced surgeons make larger sleeves and the reason they give it that there are less complications.......generally speaking..... for them.... probably true and yah gotta believe em.....never push your surgeon to make a smaller sleeve. Sleeve size should be never negotiable. Your surgeon should have a size that there comfortable with.

That said....if you want a smaller sleeve... go to a surgeon that makes a smaller one. It takes much more skill to shape a smaller sleeve.

Here is a bit of info that is a little scary......

A good VSG surgeon can cut uni-formally along the edge of the bougie following the contour of the spine of your stomach. This insures a consistent passage/flow of food through your sleeve.

A common error by some VSG surgeons.... or lack of skill or technique.... or a reason they have problems with smaller sleeves. They only get it snug around the "curve"....this creates all kinds of problems.... cause the sleeves narrowest point is about right in the middle of the sleeve. Food can get stuck and back up, acid reflux, twists, strictures.

This may explain some of problems we read about here on OH.

That's one of the reasons I travelled up to SF to one who has been doing them for a good long time (along with other challenging procedures in that region of our anatomy.) What is it about SF and bariatric surgeons - there's some sort of magnetism there that attracts the some of the best in the country?

my theory is it is so expensive to live there that you had better be good!

Frisco,

My Dr. only uses a 44.  He's been performing Bariatric procedures since the mid 80's.  He states that it reduces complication tremendously.  True enough, I wanted a smaller one, but I have to trust his judgment.  Thanks for the input.

hmm, I did not know this when I was trying to get Jawad (since I never got that far) that honestly makes me really really glad I went with whom I did. (sorry, I hope I am not sounding snitty- I know with a larger sleeve you can have just as much success as me)

I don't want to criticize your decision, and you if you are comfortable going with whatever your surgeon decides, that is completely your choice.

But I also want to say that you don't "have to" trust his judgment.  There are many other skilled surgeons with different opinions and as a result who do smaller sleeves with excellent results and much lower than the average complication rates.  This is one thing I would not settle on because you only get one shot at it.

I'm so fortunate to have had my VSG with one of the very best in the profession. Dr. Edward Yatco, can't thank him enough. Sleeve is tight as a drum, zero complications, couldn't have been better for me.
