Please evaluate what I'm eating - Why am I always starving?

OK.  So I'm 3.5 weeks out.  I'm on soft foods and working up to eating a "regular" diet by 10/1.

Please note that I take PPI's twice a day, plus 4 tums a day.

I am always STARVING!  It's not head hunger.  It's a real physical thing I'm feeling.

Here's what a day looks like for me.  Please help me find out what I'm doing wrong.

B: Protein Shake w/ low fat milk
S: Cheese stick
L: 2 oz of chicken salad made with low-fat mayo.  Three tiny melba toast rounds.
D:  More chicken salad or an egg or some FF re-fried beans
S: another cheese stick or a protein shake

I'm doing 64 oz of water/fluids a day.  I've tried to eat more but then I feel uncomfortable and still, a hour later, I'm hungry.

Can anyone recommend anything?

I'm feeling the exact same way.  I can eat then an hour later I am hungry.  I can't even have any cheese of any kind yet.  I wish I could so I could eat a laughing cow cheese or cheese stick.  See my doc. on 29th and the nut on 26th so my food choices should change then and hopefully I get cheese.  Your food looks good.  I try to chew gum when I get the hunger pains if it's not time for me to eat something.  Good luck.  Kerry

Overall, I think your choices look good. I was often hungry/starving on softer foods... this improved TREMENDOUSLY after adding a PPI (prilosec) and starting on a more solid diet.

I am very carb sensitive, and ANY amount of carbs (even in a cup of milk) can trigger munchy, hungry feelings. I limit milk (or use unsweetened almond milk), no beans, and NO melba toast. Seriously, the carbs in even small amounts increase my appetite like you wouldn't believe.

I have found that a cup of hot (decaf) chai tea w/almond milk and SF vanilla syrup... (or FF/SF hot cocoa made w/almond milk and a touch of SF salted caramel syrup) fills my tummy and keeps hunger at bay with VERY little calories/carbs....seriously, carbs are like 2 for the cocoa, and the almond milk is 1 carb/35 cals per cup. No protein there, but 1.5X the calcium of milk. Helps fill the liquid quota, too.

HTH!

Do you avoid drinking 30 minutes before eating and 45-60 minutes after?  It sounds like maybe your stomach empties partially or completely quickly after eating.

How many carbs does your day's intake add up to?  I find when I eat more carbs, I get hungry more often.

I'm no expert... just thought I'd throw some ideas out there.

Definitely don't drink around my meals (30 before, 45 after as per doc.)  I thought that eliminating all carbs would help, but I felt this way even when I did that.  It's very frustrating.  I'm afraid that, if this continues long term, it will lead to bad choices.  It's horrible to always have this feeling.

I definitely think my sleeve is emptying out really fast.  That's what it seems like to me.  I don't know though.  I'm pretty new at all this.  The funny thing is that it's not even a mild hunger.  It's like eat now or DIE kind of feeling.

I have a few thoughts on this. Since you have already taken care of the PPI, that's not it, but for others reading this, this is the first place I would look. Sometimes acid and hunger mimic each other. In your case, I would bet that your hunger will diminish when you start eating more solid protein. The food you are eating during the mushie stage goes through your stomach at a pretty fast pace. When you are going to start eating dense protein, this will slow things down and you will feel full longer. Meanwhile, I hope you are following the rules about not drinking before and after you eat, and that you are also drinking like a fish the rest of the time. The first rule is there again to slow down the passage of the food through your stomach, the second rule is because thirst and hunger can also mimic each other. I used to spend my whole day with a chai tea with lite soy milk and splenda. The moment my alarm went off telling me 45 min have passed after my meal, I would get my tea and sip it until the next meal. This helped reduce hunger quite a bit. In addition, I would check to see if reducing the carbs, ( melba toast, and re-fried beans), would reduce your hunger. I know my hunger is triggered when I eat carbs, I wonder if the same thing might be happening to you. I think you might want to play detective and try a number of these suggestions to see what helps you the most. Just remember that when you will eat solid protein, things will get better. Good luck.

I just read your reply to another poster about the intensity of your hunger, and it made me wonder about your sugar levels and thyroid levels. If this continues into the dense protein stage, I would really get that checked.

How many grams of protein and carbs are you taking in. Milk has a lot of carbs as I am sure Melba rounds do too. If you can get into ketosis then you shouldn't experience the hunger pains.

Can you eat eggs ? early on, I found a soft boiled egg very filling and satisfying. Still do in fact ! For me, early out, I had an egg in the morning, than a protein shake for snack. I ate very small meals every two hours -- I could not finish my egg, and often made a hard boiled egg into egg salad, and ate that for breakfast...half at one feeding, and half two hours later !
At 8 months out, I still eat frequently -- I have coffee in the early morning at home, eat an ounce of lo fat cheese on the way to the gym, do a half hour work out, drink water and coffee, eat my breakfast (egg or half a packet of oatmeal). Lunch I eat in two sittings -- 2 oz of dense protein each time. Sometimes a few kellogs chips or something like that with it. Lots of water inbetween....... sometimes 100 cal packet of almonds or a yogurt late in the day (4to 5 pm ish) -- we eat a late dinner, as dd works until 8pm. Dinner is about 2 oz of protein and a few bites of vegie.

I literally eat all day....but it works for me !!! dense protein, lo fat cheese and yogurt. a few vegies -- brocolli/cauliflower with lo fat cheese melted on top for lunch 1 or 2 is good too.

I am in ketosis.  I tried several days of absolutely NO CARBS at all.  Same thing happened.  I think it's the consistency of the food?  Like, the fact that it's musy makes it easier to digest.....therefore pushing it through the sleeve faster?  Maybe when I take in more dense protein, like you said, it would help.  Don't drink around meals (30 before 45 after)  I take in less than 30 carbs per day.

From your last post, it sounds like you're doing everything right, so hopefully the dense proteins you'll be on soon will solve your issue.
I too am triggered by even low amounts of carbs, so I would leave the toast out of the diet, and if you can do it, exchange the drinks for another egg or tuna salad, or ground turkey with a low carb sauce.   That will stick around longer.
