Eating on the go without eating out

Ok so my family is on a major budget.  We go out and do tons of stuff in DC (since a lot is free) but we pack our lunches.  The  staple is usually pb&j which I obviously can't have.  Last weekend all I could think to bring was a couple Atkins bars and that was no where near enough, it left me starving shortly after.  I am pre-op so no nice small tummy to help matters but I'm trying to lose as much weight as possible pre-op to make post-op life easier.  Plus it's good to know what you guys do post-op.

So what do you pack in a cold lunch (that can't be refrigerated with ease) to eat?  All I came up with was tuna in a pouch but I'm not sure I could eat that straight, I usually add a tsp of miracle whip lite and put it in a mini whole wheat pita.  I'd love to hear some other ideas.  Thanks!

I'm also pre-op, but I've read that others have been successful with beef jerky.  But why can't you have PB&J?

after VSG our stomachs are so small what we consume MUST be packed with high nutritional content and protein. PB and J is loaded with carbs and sugar. And bread makes you feel sick or heavy in the stomach for a few months post op.

So PB and J is not on your doctor's nutritional plan so we dont eat it anymore, at least not for a while. Maybe a tsp or TBSP of PB here and there as a snack with some cheese. But no jelly and no bread.

I'm not at my normal computer or I would give you allot of links.

But find the Eggface website and type in Bento Box meals in the search. There are tons of ideas of meals that you can put together. Mostly cold stuff. And it may require some pre cooking but would probably be worth it for you.

If you can't find it I'm sure someone can give you the site or PM me and I'll send it to you later in the day.

Starkist makes 2 kinds of tuna salad in a pouch, 3 oz serving, 90-100 cal, 11-13 g protein.  Very yummy.  String cheese.  One ounce of buffalo-style chicken jerkey in a baggie.  SF jello that doesn't need refrigeration.  12 almonds.  Hard boiled egg (a few hours out doesn't worry me).

My cooler on the go usually has a variety of things - some ideas of things i might bring

1. almost always a protein shake
2. cheese sticks (sometimes turkey deli meat)
3. almonds
4. egg salad or tuna salad
5. beef jerkey
6. hard boiled egg

I put two bags of ice in my cooler to keep everything cool (i have an insulated cooler so the ice doesnt melt for a good 5-6 hours and keeps everything cold enough).  It can be a pain to pack and think ahead but its so much easier in the long run when im not scrambling to find something I can eat.

I also always keep water/propel in my car so I have water everywhere I go (this doesnt work as well in the CA summer heat as I learned lol).

This is going to be your new life so some changes must be made.

Buy a lunch pack that accomodates a freezer pack. Simple and easy. This way you can eat your meats, cheeses, chicken, tuna, egg salad at proper temperature. Great snacks: beef jerky, hardboiled eggs, string cheese, mini babybel cheeses- protein, protein, protein- and protein must be kept cold.

Protein bars are loaded with carbs, no more pbj-you will have to slightly modify to be successful.

Take a closer look at the tuna in a pouch.  There are kits that are tuna salad and tuna with different spices that include crackers and the like - basically little lunch kits.  You can carry raw veggies and fruit.  Beef jerky.  At this time of year, since it's cooler, I wouldn't hesitate to carry string cheese or the babybels or make some cheese chips at home.  Nuts, roasted edamame, and seeds.  And there's nothing wrong with peanut butter in moderation.  So you could have your PBJ with a low carb bread, peanut butter and a no sugar jam/jelly/preserve.

All those ideas are great! I love this site.  I just wanted to add my 2 cents about the tuna. I dont like miracle whip and I have a problem with mayo so I just add a tablespoon or so of ceasar dressing to my tuna. It sticks really nice and is pretty tasty too boot!
