VSG takes 10 years off your life?

Has anyone heard this?  My boss keeps telling me that the two people she knows that have had weight loss surgery have said that their Dr. told them this.  It seems like the loss of weight would add 10 years to our lifespan.  I am asking my Doc next visit.

That doesn't make any sense to me.  Being obeses takes away 10+ years, plus all of the co-morbidities takes that to another level.   l think they heard it wrong or just got a load of misinformation.

It seems like your boss doesn't know what he/she is talking about. I wish people who had things to say about this surgery or why we have it would atleast do their research before they open their mouth. People hear crazy rumors and believe them. I don't believe everything I hear. I will challenge anyone and then head to google to find an answer. This surgery definately helps a person live longer by making them healthier (less heart problems, less people with diabetes, ect...).

Do not ask God to guide your footsteps if you're not willing to move your feet.

I won't argue with her... thats for sure!  But I have not heard from anyone else that these surgeries take years off your life.  I am just wondering if anyone else has.

Uneducated, unfounded and ignorant opinions sums up those comments.

Here's some factual information that you can peruse until you can speak with your surgeon.

Hhmm, my BP was 119/64 and my HR 69 yesterday. I don't see that taking away years. Sorry, there's always a kill joy. I actually had my neighbor try to convince me to not have the surgery. She said "give me 4 mo's" I didn't understand what she meant by that. She's extrememly obese too. I just told her no I was doing it and it was a done deal. This was to improver my health. Even if somewhere out there is a statistic that claimed the VSG to take 10 yrs off your life, how many more years would all the complications of being obese take away from you and your family? So, you might not live to be 100 now, maybe just 90! And how much more quality would your life have to be able to go and do? I know being obese hinders me in so many ways, it's depressing. You do what's right for you. Let the negativity fall by the wayside, and you be a happy, healthier you. Your choice. No one elses.

Have a blessed one!

Susan

Actual studies on the cost of obesity show quite the opposite.  WLS extends life to the point where WLS patients are equally expensive from a life-time health care perspective as they would if they stayed MO, had acute illnesses such as diabetes heart disease, but died relatively young before needing things like cataract surgery, yearly visits to the cardiologists and lots of prescription meds for 20 years, etc.

People say the dumbest things.  I suggest you develop your ignoring skills--you're going to need them with this one.  Stop talking to her about it!
