Low Vitamin D?

Just got my labs back and all is well except Vitamin D.  I'm already taking a calcium supplement every day that has Vit D in it, but I guess it's not enough.  So my doc called in an Rx for vitamin D.

Anyone else have this??  I don't want to be on an Rx forever with it, so hoping it resolves.

I am pre-op and was called the other day and told I need  an Rx for Vitamin D. I am also hoping it is only temporary.  I will post when I hear more.  GOOD LUCK....

Do y'all know if you were low on Vit D before surgery? Also how much Vit D is in your Calcium supplement and is it the D3? I'm taking it too, and also trying to spend a little time outside now that its not as hot. But I wanted to know what everyone else has been taking.
Thanks!

I've run into this problem several times over the past 7 years---all pre op. Usually I get a Rx of Vit D to be taken 1x per week for 4 weeks. I think they were 50,000 units. Then i would do a follow up of OTC Vit D--2000 units per day. That's what I take daily now.

No problem since surgery--but I'm religious about taking my daily vitamins.

2 years ago I had severe Vit. D deficientcy ..I really thought there was something seriously wrong with me.. Well it was my Vit. D was so low I ached everywhere. I couldn't even be hugged without hurting. I was put on RX strentgh Vit. D 50,000 units once a week. It is a very small gel pill. Then after my labs went up I went to every other week and then once a month. Now I just do OTC. It's not something to mess around with..The dr. said this is usually the reason elderly people fell so bad and they just think it is because they are old.. Sad..

Best wishes , Julie

Mine was low at the 6 months labs. Told me a 5,000 unit per day was enough. Although I haven't started taking it regularly yet....but I'm terrible with my vitamins....though this was the only one off....

I have a deficiency before the surgery for at least two years, the pills are small and I used to take them twice a day.  Afer RNY they have me in Caltrate-calcium and Vitamin D, plus the multivitamin.  It all will depend on how your body goes back to process vitamin D, including taking some sun baths (with protection) and your food that includes vitamin D
Well, some of us sometimes note the no so good things about loosing weight, I have to say that it serve on my case to find a fibroid and it will be removed.  Thanks God!

Oddly enough, you DON'T want to be on an Rx (take it while your MD says, of course). Here's why: prescription vitamin D is D2. Our bodies actually absorb D3 better and most OTC vitamin D is D3.

Once you've got your levels under control, there are cheap vitamin D supplements. I take a gummy a day at 1000 IU to keep my levels good. It's a little gummy, easy to chew. You can take 2 a day to get 2000 IU. That should keep your levels up once they are up. If not, there are 5000 IU pills.

Prescription medications can cause Vit.D deficiencies also. I take 200mg of Topamax and I have to take a prescription Vit.D because of it.

My D is low, and my doc has me on two 5,000 iu otc d3 capsules a day, then we will see how my levels are in January when I have my next bloodwork.

Plus multivitamin, B12 sublingual and calcium citrate and a PPI.
