Protein bars = road to failure?

Its usually a good idea to consume protein post-workout because your body needs to for recovery. My pre-workout snacks - i try to make them a little protein and some carbs.

What kind of protein bar is it - 16g carbs sounds reasonable for protein bars (the ones they sell at the gym are like 30+ g of carbs yikes!)

I find that they help my energy levels immensely compared to if I eat approx 40 g carbs/day. The only downside Ive found is some of them are high on sugar alcohols and give me some gastric distress (not fun during spin class lol) or just a bad after taste. They usually dont taste wonderful so they don't leave me craving anything.

If you are going on longer runs, have you tried any gels or clff blocks or anything. I tried a little 100 cal energy cliff bar the other day that was good. They are small and easy to carry on a run or while biking.

I usually eat 1/2 before working out and if im going for more than an hour, I'll eat the other half during my work out. Otherwise, I'll eat it when I'm done.

I like the Atkins Daybreak bars. They are about 16 total carbs with fiber and less than 1/2 the sugar alcohol of say the METRx Bars.  I eat one almost every day.

Not related to working out - but I do have a Quest protein bar for breakfast every now and then, and I've never had rebound hunger or cravings related to them.  In fact, they have a high amount of fiber, and I think that adding the extra fiber in my diet (Quest bars plus a few other fiber sources during the day) has been good for my weight loss.

Quest bars are the only protein bar I will use during my loss stage because, strangely, they don't affect my total carbs much I take 12 grams of fiber supplement a day. When I plan to have half a Quest bar (all the fiber I can handle at once) I subtract that fiber from my other supplements. As a result, my total carbs don't increase dramatically for the day.

Love Quest bars.

I personally am not a fan of protein bars. They are overpriced glorified candy bars in my opinion. I drink a protein shake with almond milk before my workout and it gives me the energy I need. My advice - stay away from them.

I guess the question is whether you are starting to move toward maintenance since you're less than a pound from goal. If so, knock yourself out - introduce some more carbs. If not, proceed with caution.

That said, look at the carbs and subtract the sugars and fiber from the total carbs. That will give you your sugar alchohols. Some people have gas and other fun intestinal issues from sugar alcohols, some don't. Only way you are going to know is to try it, but just be aware - if you notice that reaction you'll know where it came from.
