2 weeks post op, is this normal?

Dear all,

I am two weeks and 1 day post op and feeling good but very concerned at how little I can actually eat and wanted to know what can I expect months and even years from now?

This is an average day after 2 weeks and 1 day post surgery for me:

Breakfast: small low fat turkey sausage link chopped up
Sip protein drink (Isopure) all through the day
Lunch: 3 tablespoons of low fat soup ie cream of chicken, tomato or mixed vegetable
Snack: small wedge low fat soft cheese or 1 x tablespoon egg salad
Dinner: 1 tablespoon over cooked green beans and 1 tablespoon chopped chicken
Snack: 2 tablespoons low fat yoghurt

I try and really chew my food and eat slowly but I always get pains like terrible indegestiin in my chest after every meal.

I also can never satisfy my thirst. I sip liquids all day long but always thirsty

What am I doing wrong and importantly will it get better? I cant imagine living life only consuming this small amount of food?

Thanks you very much for any feedback?

It will get better - you are two weeks out and things are just now starting to heal and get back to normal.

Focus on protein and hydration for now.

EDIT:  Removed snarky comment.......I've been awake for 24+ hours and cranky.  Sorry!

Thanks for the response.  I thought I would be able to eat about half of what a normal person my size would eat after about 3 months. At the moment I eat  about half of what my 18 month old daughter has.

I understand the radical surgery and consequences but I want to believe I can still enjoy eating more than a tablespoon of food at each meal in the future. Will I be able to eat half a sandwhich in the future, will I be able to eat half an average meal or will this be impossible?

If not how will I stop the weight loss when I reach my goal weight?

Thanks

Emma

You may want to see if there's something in particular that's causing the stomach upset. I have found that tomato soup (one of my faves before surgery) is too acidic for me even now, 6 weeks out. Similarly, I can't really handle chicken right now, unless it's as part of chicken noodle soup or something else with sauce. Green beans I have tried twice - at a month out, I had a nibble of a fresh one at a wedding, and had bad pain. A week later, I had some french cut that were really mushy, and those went down fine.

Mainly, if it makes you feel lousy at this stage, don't have it. I tried to concentrate on getting my liquid in, and didn't start hitting 60g protein until week 3 or 4. Those first 2-3 weeks, most of my protein came in liquid form, and probably 1/2 still does.

Hang in there!

I am 3 weeks out and you are eating way more than I can, or am even allowed to eat. If you can eat that much now I'm sure as the months go on you will be able to eat a lot more. I am seeing 4 to 6 ounces as the average serving of people a few years away from surgery.

Sorry you are having a hard time dealing with the new way you eat.. But I have some questions.......

Did anyone explain to you what VSG would mean to you? How it would effect the way you eat?
did you read on your own, on here all the post people put up everyday about how little they now eat? that in the first few months it is really tiny amounts and even the people that write in 1 or 2 years later maybe some can eat 1/2 a cup per meal and some up to 1 cup of food per meal???

This is a major operation and to me if you are asking this sort of question you were NOT ready to be operated on cause you are very under informed and I am not being mean at you at all, I blame this on your Team of doctors for not making sure you had every bit of info available to you.

All the the things you are feeling are normal. Yes everything gets better with each new day and each new month. But no you wont be able to eat  half of what you used to eat. cause even half of what we used to eat was way to much..

as for the gas, buy some gas x strips they dissolve on your tongue and help a lot. also if you don't have one now get a script from your doc for acid reflux blocker which helps greatly also.

your only two weeks out if eating the same amounts that you eat hurt, then stop eating it. Isopure has enough protein in 8 oz bottles has 15 grams drink 4 a day and  you will have enough.. Try not to worry about the food or how much you can or can't eat .. Your body will stop dropping pounds when its ready every one slows down.. and in time you will get used to your new life and you will be fine. You'll be saying " OMG how did I ever eat that much"...

have a great day

Thank you this was very informative.

I met with a dietician who showed me what I could eat after a few months which was a piece of chicken, half cup of greens and half cup of potatoe. Looked like a normal small meal. It sounds like that is far fetched and I feel I was misinformed if poeple are saying only half a  cup to a  full cup of food per meal 2 and 3 years later........ No turning back now...

Everybody questions what they can eating sometimes, it does not mean they not ready for surgery. I was wondering if I could eat fruit yesterday. Everbody can eat different amounts,I can eat more than some people who are 6 months out and still never have a tell that I have eaten enough ( I stop on my own)
