Coffee.....

How soon after surgery did you get to have coffee again?  In one meeting it was hinted at that coffee would be gone forever, although they didn't come out and actually say that definitively. I'm 4 weeks out on Friday and was thinking about adding it.  Called the docs office and they again hinted that maybe 1 or 2 years might be a good time to try it.  I MISS my coffee.  Even a small cup in the morning would really be nice.

I can understand not introducing it until you have some food in the tummy as it is high in acid, but 1 to 2 years???  Hmmm.

Appreciate your thoughts and comments!

Thanks.

You should follow the recommendation of your surgeon and/or NUT however I did have cafe con leche within a few days of my VSG and have been drinking coffee on a daily basis all along.

My doctor allowed me to have regular coffee after about a week because I only drink 1 cup per day, usually only on workdays and I get my Dunkin Donuts Coffee fix. Every doctor/nutritionist has a different opinion.

I AM BACK DRINKING REG . COFFEE !!! Just 1 cup a day.
Then I make sure I get in all my water plus some extra as coffee isa diuretic.

Thanks for all the quick replies.  Thinking about waiting another week or two, but adding just one cup in the morning soon, despite what the doc/NUT says.  Been drinking coffee since I was two weeks old and I really miss it!  (Yes, really!  My grandpa spoon fed me coffee at 2 weeks -- old norwegian tradition, I think!)

Thanks!

I had coffee this morning on an empty stomach and my stomach has been hurting all day. I have had coffee before but not on an empty stomach but I think you will be ok as long as you have something on your stomach. Just start with half a cup though. I am 11 months out with the sleeve.

I kinda think it is a personal preference. My doctors said it was ok, but to take it easy until I know how my body reacts to it. I now drink it regularly and have no problems at all ( I am almost 5 months out). Do some research. I googled the effects of it on your body as far as it dehydrating you, etc. and I found out some pretty interesting stuff from things like the Mayo Clinic website and WebMD.

I drink one cup in the morning that is 1/2 regular and 1/2 decaf. I drink 1-2 at night that are just decaf.

I started the decaf stuff one week out with protein shakes. I started the one in the morning at 1 month out.

I don't drink any other kind of caffeine and like another poster said, I add in at least 1 cup of water to my daily intake just to offset the coffee.

My doc says none, but I was raised drinking coffee and I LOVE it, so I will be drinking it for the rest of my life.
