January 10, 2012 OH: Today I called my Authorization specialist to see if my insurance company covers WLS. I was informed that United Heath Care covers my VSG surgery, for that I'm very happy. I'll have to start a medically supervised diet, if requested by the insurance company. Psychology orientation is next, then I can do all my other test. This is the beginning of my journey, hopefully by next year I can join you on the losers bench. Please keep me in your prayers.

Best of luck to you! It IS QUITE a process! I should warn you! BUT, well worth it. It takes commitment to get to the surgery date, but if you don't have the commitment to get there well then you can't be expected to be committed post surgery. I started the process 3 times before I finally saw it through and committed to the process, don't be like I was, get started getting healthy today! If I had followed through the first time I would be at my goal weight by now!
As an aside, get copies of EVERYTHING, and keep a file to keep all your papers you will need together. DOn't be afraid to follow up with doctors/psychologists to ensure they have forwarded your paperwork to your weight loss surgeon, and then call his/her office to confirm they have received it. You really need to be proactive in the process or paperwork can be lost in the shuffle. Good luck keep us posted!

Congratulations, I wish you much success.  I have Highmark BCBS and although they cover the VSG they require a BMI of 50 or more. My BMI is 42. I was wondering if anyone has successfully appealled this criteria? I meet the criteria for the Gastric bypass but I would rather not have to have that surgery. Ive had the lap band which has done nothing for me. I live in Illinois and I really want the VSG.

hmm, my surgeon explained to me that VSG was originally performed on the morbidly obese (BMI 50+) as a first step and was later transitioned to a Gastric bypass when they were able to withstand the surgery. Sounds like your insurance companys guidelines are following this program. Just so you know my insurance claimed they didn't cover the surgery at all. Just because they say no doesn't mean that it is a done deal. Your WLS will be able to tell you, there is usually a person who works there that can tell you specifically what requirements need to be met in order for your insurance to cover it. If it's deemed medically necessary they can't refuse it!
