I've got to decide this week on whether on not to sign up for my next acclerated class.   Each class only lasts 5 weeks.  If you miss one class your lose 10% of your final grade.  If you miss two classes you fail.

I'd be getting out of the hospital (if all goes as planned) on Thursday and have class the next day.   I know I won't be able to drive myself.

I'm just wondering if I'll be physically able to sit at a hard desk for four hours.    Tell me how you felt 3 days after surgery.

Thanks,
Amy

I would not have been able to. I was very sore and had absolutely no energy at 3/4 days post op, however I also had a hernia repaired.

I could not have. Too uncomfortable sitting upright. Probably could not have done that for a couple weeks. But I'm 55 years old. Maybe some of the younger folks could have; but I KNOW that I couldn't.

I had surgery on Wednesday and cannot imagine sitting upright for that long only 3 days after surgery. I remained hospitalized for two days AFTER surgery but am still really groggy and in pain. Don't pu**** If the classes can wait, let yourself heal before trying to do too much. Your health is so much more important at this point in your life.

As a grad student, my opinion is that you could physically do it, but the accelerated classes are time consuming and a lot of work. You are going to be going through a lot of changes after surgery and the last thing you need to be worried about it school. It's going to be hard enough to figure out a sleep, protein, liquid, poop schedule and you're going to be tired and then energetic and then tired and possibly neauseated, possibly in pain. Sure you can sit still for 4 hours, but I doubt you'll be able to concentrate on an regular class let alone a regular class. When they tell you that first month is difficult, they aren't lying. It's a rollercoaster. What's the rush? You have the rest of your life anyway... and it's about to get a whole lot better. I just took a leave of absence from school and it was my VERY last quarter before my 2nd credential and masters! Soooo close but I decided my health and future were way more exciting than that. Plus, I wasn't going to risk an F. No do-overs in grad school!

edit: I just reread this and saw all the errors! ha! see my point? Can't concentrate! j/k... but seriously, it's not like you're getting a few stitches, this is major surgery that requires major life changes and your body  will be recovering, and adjusting in some huge ways.

I also want to add that I have no husband or children and I still feel that an accelerated class is too much unless it's a class you don't have to think for.

I totally agree with hwag5149. I know I already posted but wanted to add that I am a grad student as well and also took the semester off and I am sooooo happy I did as my focus has been and needs to be on recuperating and developing some new habits. Good luck in whatever you decide to do

NO, NO, NO! Take the 5 weeks off and pick it up later. 8 days after surgery I put on a pair of pants that buttoned and zipped and went to lunch with my husband. After 2 sips of iced tea I had to unbutton my pants to breathe normally.

I came home on Saturday and my daughter had surgery that Monday and I was able to sit in the hospital with no discomfort. However, we got to go home that afternoon and it wasn't class. If you have NO other ties..like young children and or full time job..I would say go for it. You can concentrate on your schooling and be done.  If you have ties, I would say wait. You don't want to do too much. Your top priority is getting yourself well. good luck!
