Pain reliever? Advil vs Tylonol? Help!

Which is ok to take for muscle pain?

I haven't had any pain or headaches since surgery and today I have some serious muscle pain from weight lifting.

Before VSG I used Advil because it worked the best for me.

Is it ok now? Or should I take Tylonol?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

A bath in Epsom does wonders for muscular pain. Since you have a sleeve, you can take Advil, especially if you are taking an acid reducer. To be on the safe side, try Tylenol first. When I am really sore from lifting weights, a bath in Epsom salts is very helpful.

I've used both for various reasons since surgery.  Tylenol works through your liver and advil through your stomach.  So it's best to follow the dosage instruction listed on the label and not go over that (applies to both types).

I think you're fine to take either.

I know they suggest you take Tylenol over Advil however Advil does seem to work better for me when it comes to muscle pain so I have taken Advil occasionally I think you are ok to take it just don't take it every day or long term but for a day or two I think you are ok at least I can say I have taken it Bd I am just fine

Tylenol is supposed to be most gentle on the stomach. My husband could take small doses of Advil as far out from surgery as you are, but he had to take it with food and to take the smallest dose possible.

Honestly though, with muscle pain from exercise, you may do better with a muscle rub such as icyhot. There are versions out there that don't smell, or at least don't smell as strong. You could also try icing down the area that hurts for about 15-20 minutes at a time.

I hope that helps.

Hey Donna,

I was told no Advil. When I asked my surgeon's nurse why, I was told that large amounts of Advil and steroids injested can actually re-open the stomach. She said that my surgeon actually had a patient, not his own but one he inherited, that took advil after surgery and eventually reopened his Sleeve (I have no idea how much he took or how long he took it).

Tylenol is fine.

If it is for muscle ache try STOP Pain (I get it at Walgreens). Also, there is a new-ish rub-in creme called Voltaren. It is Ibuproen-based and is wonderful. You will need a prescription for it, but I love it because I can put it just on the spot that hurts and not take a medication that affects my entire body. My surgeon approved it because the creme isn't injested. I try to be careful how much I use because it is still something you could over-use (over-dose) on, like most meds.

Of course, ask your own doctor and surgeon.

My doc said if your going to take anti inflammatories (mobic, advil, ibuprofen) to make sure you take PPIs no matter how far out you are. Tylenol you don't need to but the Nsaids cause quite a bit of irratation even if you can't feel it externally its going on internally. The PPIs keep the acids from aggavating things more

My doc said advil and other anti-inflammatories are ok as long as they are taken occasionally and not in large amounts.

My surgeon said limited NSAIDS are possible, call him first,LOL..    Can you try Tylenol and find a nice long Jacuzzi soak and see if that doesn't take care of it?
