Okay, maybe I'm not so confident ... 1day out

I'm one day out and I know I am making the right decision.  I am not second guessing my new life and how I chose to get there.  I am so very fortunate that my entire family is behind me, even my litte ones (okay, they aren't so little).  I am also very fortunate that I found this board and all the wonderful people here.

I cannot worry myself about complications that I have no control over.  I trust my surgeon and the facility taking care of me and that is all I can do with those matters.

I AM worried about silly things such as getting the IV in (I'm a VERY hard stick) and nausea/vomiting.   The IV matter will be over quickly and I like to be upfront with the person putting in the IV, asking for warm compresses and suggesting that my left arm is better.  As for the nausea/vomiting, the doctor is prescribing me medication to help, but I can't help thinking about it and dreading the awful feeling.  I've had two HUGE babies without drugs and I'm worried about an upset tummy!

Been there, done that advice to help me deal with/combat nausea?

Thanks!

I warned my surgeon, nurses, anesthesiologist, anybody who would listen that I get major nausea/vomiting in recovery and so they stuck a nausea patch behind my ear that I wore for 5 days and i had nausea meds in my IV after I woke up. I had ONE bout of nausea right when I woke up but they quickly slipped a lil sumpin sumpin in my IV and whoop I was just dandy again, never even threw up. Check on having that patch done before you go into surgery. I think they gave me mine about an hour before I went under.
And good luck!!! Looking forward to seeing you on the flip side :D

Everyone is different, but I did not have any nausea or vomitting.  Plan for the worst, expect the best.  Big hugs - you'll do great!!

I like Happy's advice to you.  I just had my surgery March 1 and did great!  While waking up in recovery I felt nauseated but they gave me Phenergan and I went back to sleep.  When I woke up, I felt wonderful.  I'm a nurse and if you politely tell the staff which arm is better, ect....they will listen to you.  We just don't like rude people telling us how to do our jobs.  Good luck to you!

I am right there with you! I am on Wednesday and getting more anxiety by the minute!  I want it to be over! We choose our doctors because we believe in them, and that is what I keep telling myself!
I will send a prayer for you!

I'm praying for you that everything will go well & that all the preventatives that can be done, will be done to help your experience be better.

I hadn't started worrying about that stuff until the car ride to the hospital (3 hrs!) but the IV & blood draws were my biggest concerns, not so much the nausea.   I know this isn't encouraging, but true...they had a very hard time finding my veins (typical).  They were able to use my big one on my hand for the IV, but then they were going to draw blood from that entry (before connecting the IV line) & couldn't get it to work & didn't want to blow the vein so while the IV was in without much problem they had to stick me another 7 times or so to try to get the labs drawn that they needed. Get this, they poked me at least 4 times to get a vial of blood to confirm my blood type even though that had been done a week before surgery AND if I were to need a transfusion, they would have just given me the O or whatever the type is that everyone can accept.  Nuts, but it was policy!  I told a few of them what they could do with that policy!  Then after surgery, I had at least another 10 failed attempts at blood draws, 2 successful.  Good thing was that if one nurse tried 2x, they wouldn't keep poking, they found another nurse to come try at that point. Not only were my veins hard-sticks to begin with, then you add mild dehydration (no water after midnight & then basically nothing after you wake up!).  I'd encourage you to get as much fluid in your body as possible today while you still can!  I know it'll probably just run through you but at least you can say you tried!

I'm so excited for you!  While it's a little stressful now & you may feel like a bu**** you for a few days afterwards, the better health is worth the hardships! ~Melissa

Happy 966 hit the nail on the head.  Plan  for the worst and hope for the best.  I  have a big issue with meds  my  body  hates,  and  they  did  there  best  to help me,  but  still got  pretty sick,  but  they gave  me steroid shot, after next  day  and  patch  and  things   got  100 percent better.  I am one of these people  that never  even take a Tylenol.  So  my  body  hates  meds.  I  am home now,  5 days out  and  fell 100 percent.      I  was  sick  with  allot  of extra blood in tummy,  the  thinner  thinned  my blood too much  and  made a icky mess.   but  let  me  tell  you,  the  few  times  i  got  sick,  it  was  not  all  that,  and  as  far as  pain  hardly any.  and  I  would  do  it  100 times  over  if  i had  to ,  because  I know  what  it  will be  in  the  future.
So  I  have  faith you  will  be  fine.   go in  calm,  and  trust  your doctor.  I  had  all the  faith in  doctor  that  is  something  like  this  happen  he  would  take  care  of  and  he  did.
Good  luck  and   let us  know how your  doing.

Mary

No worries I had the same issue....The Nausea Patch behind my ear before surgery did the trick.I am also a very hard stick I was stuck 7 times before a Nurse came in with what he said was a child size needle (a 23 if I am not mistaken) went in through my wrist and got blood...for me that was a relief. You will do fine... just remember any Minor discomfort is only temporary.
