I had this post-op - a few months ago - spontaneous bleeding from my gums.

It was a Vitamin K issue.  I have low red, white, and platelet counts due to another issue...and the low K just added to it.

But again - that's just me.

I hope they figure out what's wrong!

How scary!  I'm sure they will find out what's going on with you.  I have the opposite problem with a blood clotting disorder.  My blood loves to clot too much.  Your heme should take care of things so hopefully this doesn't postpone your surgery.

I read once that people whose gums bleed tend to be low on Vitamin C but that was for the people who might bleed a little when they brush their teeth.... HOWEVER- if your doc says you're not clotting, that could be vitamin K, platelets, and a whole other slew of things.  Please don't take it lightly.  Follow the doc's orders.  Wishing you a speedy recovery!!!!

Thanks so much! My platelets are unbelievably a 1, well, they're at a 3 now after the first transfusion. I hope they find out what's going on soon. Thanks again!

Medications can be causing the low platelets and that's why you're not clotting (platelets make you clot).  Wow!  A 1????  Bless your heart!

Make sure you let the doc know any and all meds you're taking, including over the counter meds.  Even aspirin can affect platelets.  Some antibiotics like Zyvox can also affect.

The only way to resolve it is to find out what's wrong, fix it, and then give you platelets (your transfusions****il you're replenished.

Look at it as a blessing...if you went under the knife with platelets of 1, you would have bled to death on the table.  (I'm sure they would do a quick lab before operating anyway, but still)  At least it's happening now and they can fix you and keep you safe.

definite blessing.  can you imagine if you had gone up to the point of right before surgery and finding out at the last minute?  that would be so hard.  it's good you found out now.  and i hope they get it all straightened out for you so you can have a safe and successful surgery.

whatever you do don't google things, it's always worst case scenarios.
