WV Bans Drive-Thru Windows
OK They didn't really. . . It's a spoof site like The Onion but I thougth it brought out an interesting idea. Would the lack of drive-thrus really stop people from eating it? Help even a little? I lived in England where they are VERY strict about not eating while driving. Even apples! And I will say that really curbed (pun intended) my fast food eating.

When I was a kid, no one had ever heard of drive-through anything -- no food, no banking, no dry cleaners, etc etc. We had to get out of the car and go in for EVERYTHING! Of course, this is not the only factor in the obesity rise in this country, but it is another convenience thing that makes us do less physical activity ... not to mention the ease of whipping through the drive-through to get a little (big!) snack!
The other side of it is now I am disabled and find it very difficult to walk, if it weren't for drive-throughs I would have to rely on friends to do WAY more stuff for me!
Plusses and minuses, eh?

hrford,
That is a very interesting point! I know it would really 'curb' my stopping because I wouldn't actually want to get out and (god forbid) walk inside! :)
I'm so busy that drive-thrus (not just food) are a huge help in getting things done. I don't feel like I'd get as much done without them.
Americans are so spoiled though that we have to have our convenience and everything supersized. I won't get on that soapbox though. I've got to room to talk about supersizing anything.
Thanks for this post!!

When I've been in England and I have not seen the numbers of people walking around eating or with a drink in their hands, either, like we see everywhere. It seems that more people are inclined to sit down and eat, and then walk.
We have turned into a nation of people who eat constantly. Grab a burger and walk around chowing on it. Drive through and pick up tacos and drive around chowing on them. And I have been guilty, especially of eating and driving. Do it all the time.
That's going to change!

On the whole the pace of life tends to be different in the US. We're in a hurry to do everything, include eat. I didn't put the bulk of my weight on until I moved back to the states and then I put 70lbs on in less than 3 years. . . That should speak volumes. That being said England still battles an obesity problem just not nearly to the level we do.

I love England so much. I wish I could spend a year there. I lose weight every time I go, even though I'm eating fattening foods. (Cornish pasties, oh my!)
But people just walk more. I drive to my local Starbucks. In England, we would think nothing of walking that far to the shops and there are so many beautiful footpaths. It's a very different style of life.

Yep we walked so much more in England it wasn't funny. I lived in the Yorkshire Dales (one of the most beautiful places on earth) and we went on hikes and walks almost daily (picking blackberries).

On my two trips to Japan, the only food that I saw people consume while walking was ice cream. But that didnt apply to tourists. They also had smoking corners, rather than walk down the street smoking.
I lived in WU for eight years. I never hit the drive thru because I was a vegetarian and ate from my organic garden, but golly, the drive thru lines were long!
