Upper GI Standard?
One doc's website I looked at said that prospective patients should have an Upper GI before coming to see him. That seemed extreme to me, but what do I know?
The tech who was helping with my Upper GI today said his sister had a similar surgery to mine (I didn't ask which one) and that they didn't do an Upper GI first and found a hiatal hernia which they then fixed. He said it didn't cause any real problems, but he thought my doctor was very thorough and good if he ordered them routinely.
Are they usually routine before a sleeve? Does it vary with doctor and individual? Did you have one?

I am almost finished jumping through pre-surgery hoops. Unfortunately, I haven't met the surgeon yet as the original surgeon I was going to see was deployed. Anyway, my pre-op testing included an Upper GI Series, a chest x-ray as well as several sonograms. I haven't selected a surgery yet but I am leaning sleeve. The Bariatric Center I chose has the same requirements regardless of the type of surgery.

Hi!
My surgeon required one and he said he requires it of all of his patients. I had my endoscopy last Friday. They put me to sleep, it was quick and painless and no problems afterwards. My doctor said they are looking for ulcers, hernias and a specific bacteria that needs to be treated before surgery. He also said that if they found a hernia they would repair it during my VSG procedure but that it wouldn't prevent the procedure from going forward. Luckiyl everything was fine. I was anxious about it too, but it really was a very simple thing and if it helps make sure the doc doesn't have any surprises on surgery day it's a positive thing!

My surgeon requires an upper GI, but their office arranges it. You go for your first visit, he does and exam and meets with you, then they arrange all the pre-op testing. But every surgeon's office is different. I had to have:
An upper GI
An abdominal ultrasound
An echocardiogram
A sleep study
Some blood work
Psyche exam
....I think that's it, but I may have forgotten something.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22
175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012
Me and hubby are "jumping thru hoops" now. We went to the seminar back in March, then had initial consultation, 6 week supervised diet, review of medical records, and have psyche exam and exam with dr coming up May 17 and back-to-back endoscopies on May 18 (our surgeon also does the endoscopy), then hopefully we can get our surgeries scheduled.
Getting a little scared and nervous. We've gone this far so there is NO backing out now. lol

i think it's dr by dr, case by case... i did not have to have an upper gi, nor did my husband, but there's a spot for it on our drs order sheet, so i'm sure he orders it for some
