DRINKING and EATING same time....bogus or real?

I remember back in the day I was ~7 months out I think.....asking Amy, this forums sponsor's LapSF/Cirangle ... then nutritionalist....when she used to come here and field questions...

If we aren't supposed to eat and drink at the same time....HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN SOUPS?

well I never got an answer on that one!
believe me I had many ?s for her post op, (maybe too many!) to clarify contradictions that were addressed or not addressed in my surgeon's manual.

I see several topics these days on eating SOUPS for fat loss...and it got me thinking on this AGAIN

do we really have to worry about fluids and solids during meals?... why or why not?

Is this drinking/eating at the same time..a bunch of bull**** If not ..what makes SOUPS , cereals w/ milk exempt?

Do soups "close our pyloric valve" or sumthin?

~4 years out and still wonder about it. If anyone has the answer from a reliable source....Im all ears...err ...eyes!

I'm interested since you are so far out have you tried it?

I drank too quickly after I ate a few days ago and it was painful!  But I'm only 3 months out.

On a side note, how much can you eat at one sitting?  Do you stick to the eating over 30 minutes still?

My dietitian was asked this in group and her response was that of course you're physically able to eat soup, cereal and milk, etc.  But it won't stick in your belly like dense protein will, so you'll feel hungry.

My personal experience confirms this.  I hate feeling hungry, so I'm happy to stick to dense protein and not drink for as long as possible after.  The food stays in my stomach and I feel full right up to the second that I start drinking.  Then, whoosh, my tummy is empty.

My experience exactly.  Can as opposed to effective as a food source. Other than the beginning stages soup is really useless in terms of satiation. Never was a cereal person.

I've had the opposite experience. Drinking after eating makes me more full immediately but I don't tend to stay full for long regardless of what I eat. I can eat chicken and then eat it again a half hour later. I can do the same thing with tuna. I don't usually drink when I eat but if I do, I tend to stay full longer because my stomach feels tight from the liquids. I don't know if that makes sense.

At nearly a year out, I feel terrible if I eat and drink together or drink right after I eat- even a little bit.  I can't do soups (even runny chili) or cereal with milk or I have the same problem.  It just does not sit right with me... I can drink before, but not during/after.

I can only sip a little water with a meal because the liquid takes necessary room for dense meats.  I continue to eat meat or protein first.  If I try to eat soup, I eat the tofu or meat first, and can't drink any the liquid or I am full.  I was told not to eat yogurt, popslices, soups (other than creamy), or drink with meals.  Others are correct because we are to eat dense protein first, then veggies or fruit.

my doctor told me eat dense protein first-dont drink and let your body absorb the protein-as for me why would i even waste my time eating carb and sugar loaded cereal-thats the same things that help get me to the point of needing wls-as for soups i rarely would have them except for thick chili-just my thoughts...
