Issues...Thyroid or Surgery?
VSG on 04/04/12
Yes. I got a TSH test - 1 week pre-op (I have been on levothyroxine for 6 years for underactive thyroid), that test was in the 3.4 range. This test I just had last week was in the 1.3 range. But I am still taking my normal dose of levothyroxine. So I am wondering if I am on the wrong dose?!?

1.3 is right where you should. At TSH of 3.4 your were undermedicated, most likely, unless you had fT3 and fT4 tests that were very high. I like my TSH to be about 1 on the nose. I've been on Levoxyl for almost 20 years, and I have no thyroid function whatsoever. They cut my levoxyl dosage way back in February, and when my TSH went above 3 I felt like death warmed over. Here's some information you might find helpful.

I have Graves'. I've been both Hyper and Hypothyroid. I know how they feel. I tend to listen to my body, and I had to cry 'bull****' when my current endocrinologist's PA tried to suggest I was hyperthyroid based on TSH levels being low. Lots of things can supress TSH, and the fact my resting heart' rate sits at about 45bpm suggests. You have to be your own best advocate.
Having said that, and this is an important caveat, you just had 85% of a major organ removed, and you're burning fat for fuel. You should be fatigued, and your body is going to try and conserve energy. Listen to your body, but keep in mind it's going to tell you all kinds of contradictory things for a while.

It just sucks when you are on here and everyone is working out right away and I feel like the biggest wimp cause I can't even walk without getting fatigued. It's bull!! I wasn't like this before, and I had NO problems with pain after surgery! I was only uncomfortable and sore like I had done sit ups! Makes me wonder if they took anything - lol!!
I will definitely ask my doctor what I need to do. But I really feel like my dosage must be off if I have gone down that much?!?
Anyway, thank you - I will post what happens after my Dr. appointment.

I had hypothyroidism for years and took Levothyroxine for it. About a month after surgery I started feeling like my heart was racing, I wasn't sleeping well and I felt really hyper. I went ahead and had my thyroid checked with my doctor and he took me off the thyroid med immediately because my numbers went the other way. I've had my fT3 and fT4 checked twice in 6 months (will have it checked again this month) and they've been well in the normal range.
My point is, I almost didn't have it checked because I kept telling myself that my whole body was wacked out because of the surgery.
I'm really glad I listened to by my body. If nothing was wrong I would have been out a copay.
For peace of mind, IMO, have your bloodwork done and talk to your doc. He she test your free T3 and free T4, not just the TSH.

Yeah - I had my blood work done through my surgeon's office, so now I have to see my primary care physician in order to get the info. on all of it. That's why it's frustrating. I hate that these things take weeks or months before you get to a dr. that will help you make a change. When I was first out of surgery I couldn't sleep either and I wanted to go all the time. I really feel now that my thyroid was changing and I didn't even know it. Thought it was from surgery. So now I am concerned and don't wanna wait. I wanna see if I can change meds, but my PC has changed so they can't look at my blood work and call me in a new scrip. Ugh! So frustrating!! I just know this is not me. I have tried to walk to get un-depressed, and moving, and going, but I am still snapping, and tired, and all of that. It's not normal!!
Thanks for your post! It helps to know someone else had a change!!

This is an important point -- you will know it if you're hyperthyroid and overmedicate. The symptoms acing heart, pressured speech, hand tremors, not sleeping, etc., rather than fatigue. If you're hyperthyroid to the point where you are fatigued, it's pretty extreme. I got to that point before I was diagnosed with Graves', originally, and my thyroid uptake was 6 times normal.
