B-12 sublingqual question

How much should I be taking daily?
Is it true that with a sleeve you are no longer able to absorb B-12 in a daily vitamin?

Thanks in advance,
donna

I take the 2500mcg ones from Costco, Nature's Bounty brand I believe.  I was taking one a day, and then my blood work showed that I was a bit high on B, so I knocked it down to every other day, per my surgeons office.

If youre due for blood work anytime soon, I'd check your levels and then work from there, I think like most anything else, it's all an experiment until you find exactly what works for you.  I was told by my surgeons office that I would likely be taking a B-12 supplement for the rest of my life.

Hope this helps!

The NUT in the WLS program I'm with, said to take 1000mcg once a week.  I'm not sure that we can't absorb B-12 from a daily vitamin, but that may be the case.  I was under the impression that we can't get enough from the daily vitamin and our food, so we need the additional dose to supplement.

Hi Donna,
I buy the B12 from Costco as well and I was taking 2500mcg three times a week. I just had some blood work done and my B12 came back high. According to Kaiser, the standard range for B12 is 200-910 pg/mL units. Mine came back 997. Kaiser sent me a letter telling my to switch to 1000 mcg once per week. So, it looks like I will only be taking my B12 once per week now rather than the three times a week I was taking it. I hope this helps, good luck.

Hey Donna,

I'm taking 500 mg once a day.  I'm not due for blood work yet so I'm not sure what my levels are yet.  I don't believe there are any absorbtion issues with the vitamins but we aren't eating as much which makes it necessary for us to take vitamins.  That's my reasoning anyway.

Donna,
I saw my metabolic dr a few weeks ago and asked him if I should be taking B12 since I read so many people on here do. He said that my level was fine in my most recent blood work so I didn't need it. Maybe you should wait until you have blood work done to see if you even need it.

Just to clarify ... The B12 issue has not as much to do with the sleeve, or any surgery, as it has to with the fact that bariatric patients are likely to be on antacids longterm... this increase in pH deminishes the ability to breakdown and pull B12 from food we eat.

Also, a lot of overweight people tend to be diabetic or insulin resistent and take metformin which makes the deficient in B12 as well.
