recently published article cites increase in coronary events (aka heart attacks) due to calcium supplementation.

Nope! I just had my labs done and my calcium level was in the lower range of normal. I'm going to ask my doc at my six month check up on June 13th. See what she and the surgeon have to say about it. If you read the articles carefully, you'll notice there is no conclusive proof that the calcium is the culprit - at least that's what I gleened from the articles I read.

I'm going in for a bone density test soon, I have been taking about 600 mg a day of calcium since the surgery. I know I should be taking more and I'm trying to get it in.
I'm hoping the bone density test will help be to figure out how much i can get away with.

We will see.

But, if it's a toss up between heart attack and osteo...well that just sucks!

As  well I heard the same report and am very concerned.  I just had surgery 12 days ago and have not started Calcium and am going to talk to my Doc, and Nut ASAP!  The scary thing is the report says an 80% chance of coranary issues.  I think thats the numbers I heard.

Do a search here, there was a great thread about it last week.

Its not a sound scientific paper.

After having breast cancer (10 year survivor in Sept.-yay!!!) and taking Arimidex for 5 years - it leaches calcium from you bones - I was borderline osteoporosis. I started taking Bariatric Advantage chewable calcium a year ago when I started my 6 month pre-op supervised diet - 1000mg a day. The supplement along with the amount of calcium I get in food bumps my daily intake to between 1500 - 1800 mg.

Had a bone density test last month and my readings actually improved - first time in 10 years there has been an improvement. I intend to continue using BA chewables along with eating cheese, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and almond milk.

I stopped taking it... will wait for labs to see if I need it.  86% increase.  Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Here is the article, read it then discuss with your surgeon
(the last page discusses the limitations of this ONE study, pay attention there)
