How to not walk like a fat person?

Question for you all - guys and girls?

I am putting together a blog posting on this and wanted to get some opinions and food for thought from you all?

If you are a lifer like me, you have a habit of walking a certain way - a kind of hunched over head down sort of posture.  I noticed myself doing it the other day and started kind of paying attention to other people.  I have been trying to mentally make the adjustment to not do it, but its such a natural state that I have to be purposefully mindful of it.

So the question - especially to the vets - How did you learn to NOT walk like you were still heavy?  Did it happen automatically?  Were you conscious of it at some point?

Whats your experience with your changing posture?

I think I've become sort of hunched but my husband says I look normal.

As far as walking like a fat person, do you mean insecure? Head down, eyes averted, I don't count for anything cause I'm fat, kind of walking or something else???

I still tend to try and make myself as inconspicuous as possible.

I think its both - I think the hunched posture is more trying to avoid being looked at or noticed - not just because of the weight.

If it's the psychological thing, I still do it. I try and correct myself when I realize it but do still catch myself looking down and sort of curling into myself.

I wonder if once your brain catches up (mine sure as hell has not) then you start to exude more confidence?? Maybe some far out Vets can chime in?

GREAT QUESTION!! my cousin had GBP about 5 years ago... it isnt a total success, no fault of the surgery or the doctor, but she has managed to lose 200 pounds... She currently weighs about 275 ( she admits to wearing a women's size 22/24 clothing and is about 5'8").... her gait includes what appears like she is favoring & walking on her inside ankles....even with the eightloss it isnt better.... I thought with time she would straighten her feet out & walk tall..... Im wondering now if perhaps there isnt permenant foot/ankle damage....

Trust me, you have a world of surprise headed your way as you go through surgery and weight loss.  I joke that its like getting superpowers without the bother of radioactive spiders or nuclear accidents.

I have been concious of my posture after a speaker came to talk to a group of us ladies about how standing and walking tall can make you look 10 lbs. lighter and it does!  Since then, I have walked with my head high and shoulders back - even when I was a lot heavier.

My mom just had this conversation with me. She noticed that I am still walking the way I used to when my legs and stomach were bigger and that my head is always down. I really hadn't noticed until then that my body had even changed. So I've recruited a couple friends/co-workers and my family to yell at me if they see me walking like I used to. So far it's working, I was at the store and had my friend yell "stop slouching!" and that straightened me right up. And just walking around I try to mimic thinner peoples swagger until it becomes second nature. It's weird because in some ways I feel like I'm learning to walk all over again.
That's just my experience....I'm sure I will continue to learn as the weight comes off and my body continues to change.

And by the way, you are doing great!!

I concentrate on tightening my abs,  putting my shoulders back, and focusing my gaze about 10 feet ahead of me.  I have to constantly remind myself to do it. :).
