First Cheat Day

After being damn near perfect for 6 weeks, I allowed myself a cheat day. I don't feel guilty. We all need a break once in a while. Tomorrow I will go back to eating properly but today a piece of LJS chicken was really great.

My point is not to brag but to reassure everyone that one day is not the death of your surgery. Each day is a new day. You are not a failure if you allow yourself some edible pleasure every great once in a while. Be careful and don't overeat your sleeve, bookmark the food with lots of activity. I'm doing 2 days of water park and museum to counteract the calories for example. Food is still something to be enjoyed as is life.

Nobody eats perfectly all the time. I agree with that.

What I would encourage you to do is to analyze why you felt you needed a cheat day? I would encourage anyone eating off plan to do the same thing? Its not the food thats as important as the motivation behind it. Sometimes a cupcake is just a cupcake, sometimes its a symptom. Its really important to kow the difference.

Along with eating off plan, you have other behaviors that are important. You say you "bookmarked" you LJS chicken with exercise. Did you log it in your food journal so you know how far off plan you went? Do you know how much exercise it takes to negate the xtra calories?

These things are whats more important than the food. Yes, you can have a sweet or a snack or an off plan day. Its more important to make sure that you use the other tools to make sure that you stay on track.

You mention that lack of guilt, and knowing you can start back up. Thats important. A bad choice does not make you a bad person. Its also important to not throw the rest of the tools out and justify it with just that one statement.

So please, if you did, let your readers know how you held yourslef accountable for your cheat day - not just that you had one. You've posted a lot lately about eating right and being stalled. Was your cheat day a reaction to that frustration?

I should have included the following details (sorry)

I def accounted for the extra calories. I was in the middle of 7 hours of walkling outside in the TX heat for the second day. It was only 140 calories / 9 carbs / 8 fat / 8 protien.
As far as the stall I was coming in way under on carbs and attributed that to the stall. It was the only thing that was off when I went over my journal records.
For me a piece of chicken at 140 calories seemed like a cheat day. Also over the last 48 hours I have burned 3934 calories

Rob had the "White Gloves" on !

Me.... I don't own any.......

So..... in the most polite way.......

Do I buy into "Cheat Day" in general during WL....... No.....

Did I have an occasional non-appropriate food during WL...... Yes.....

People on this board have varied issues...... Some can control "Off Plan Cheats" some (a lot) can't....

Read the forum here..... every other page has a post on Claimed "Addiction"......I happen to think anyone who needs WLS has some level of Addiction, but that's another story......

In general, I think your philosophy and thinking "In General" is more of maintenance thinking.......

For a lot here..... one cheat leads to the next cheat and than regular cheats than daily cheats than hourly cheats.....

Some of us have been here long enough to see people we have bonded with and see them not make goal or struggle or experience regain or all the above...... It gets to ya after a while.....

Please read Ms Shell's most recent posts...... I mention this because she put it out there not only for herself, but to share her experience with others....

This may work for you...... it's for you to find out.

I always tell people to lose the weight first...... than in maintenance get experimental and find your tolerances......

Food is something to be enjoyed........in a non abusive way......

"Sometimes a cupcake is just a cupcake, sometimes its a symptom.  Its really important to kow the difference."

Love this.  I may actually type this up and stick it on my bathroom mirror.

To the OP.  I get it.  I have been far from the model plan myself.  My only gentle caution is to be careful of the difference between rationalizing and truly making adjustments after a less than ideal choice.  i caution this because it can become easy to follow-up one bad choice with another.  I also think that it is wonderful that you are mindful about developing skills to put yourself back on plan in this relatively controlled manner.  At some point you may find that you self destruct for a meal or a day... will you be able to put yourself back on plan.  I personally think that is a positively critical skill and I like that you are thinking about it.

Not even sure what LBJ chicken is... because the chicken part seems like a good choice.  I will have to go with that it is of the deep fried variety I guess or perhaps you had too much.

Take good care of yourself!

I question the concept of the "cheat day."  I think the phrase implies a day of doing whatever you want, going off plan and not caring.  I know you said you only had 148 calories of chicken that you felt wasn't on plan, but trust me - down the road, allowing yourself a cheat day could very easily lead to 1480 extra calories.

And yes, like others have said, one big cheat day can make staying on plan the next day and the next day just all that much harder.  It is pure biology - refined carbs cause your body to
crave more refined carbs.

I guess my question is why does 148 calories of chicken imply an entire cheat day?  To me, that would be on plan.  Maybe it was fried and therefore not enough protein for the calories?  I just bring this up because "all or nothing" thinking is something that many of us have dealt with here.  It doesn't have to be "nearly perfect" or "cheat day"... there is a wide range of behaviors in between.
