CARBS

I'm going to jump in here without reading the rest of the responses!! I too am hypoglycemic (diabetic pre-op) however I will not tell you the amount of carbs you should or should not eat. Your body will have to determine that. Being hypoglycemic does not mean you have to eat high carbs. I lost just fine keeping my carbs below 60 per day. Any lower and I had major issues. I also had/have to eat every 2-3 hours to keep my blood sugars regulated.

My carbs came from dairy, veggies, whole grains and a limited amount of fruit. I limited (as in very very occasionally had) bread, pasta, potatoes, flour or sugar. Now I occasionally have a baked potato and real sugar. I do have 1 English Muffin that is either whole grain (not whole wheat-there is a difference) or sprouted grains.

This surgery is not a 1 size fits all plan, you will have to determine what works for you and go with it but make sure your nut/dietitian are on board with what you are doing.

Ms Shell has a point on types of carbs... I did not explain that well enough.  No refined carbs, complex carbs that go easy on the glycemic index.  I eat 6 times a day... 3 times I try to hover around 15 net carbs and the other three times around 30 net carbs.  It is not a hard and fast rule, but a target.  The idea is to keep your insulin level from spiking... that is what causes the cravings and reactive hypoglycemia.  Nice and steady on the carbs without going nuts, and paying attention to the quality of the carb.  Fruit and veggies is most of the carb, some in the protein shakes or milk, grains.... again no refined junk.  I also have to eat before bed to keep from being low in the morning.

I also am prepared to adjust down if my monthly averages do not hold up well.  (This month excluded due to other medical issues and not being able to exercise in the manner I normally do.)

You should also know that normally exercise very regularly- 6 days a week of either a 4-5 mile walk or an hour on the elliptical.   That is key... if you do 800 with no exercise it is about the same as my higher cals with the exercise.  My medical team constantly stresses that the exercise is a huge factor for maintenence so catch the habit now!

And let us not forget that not all carbs are created equal! I don't do well with bread/grain carbs, so I eat fruit to get mine in. I'll be adding more leafy vegetables once my stomach can tolerate them.

I agree with following what your NUT said at the low end of the cals and carbs.  The low carb diets that alot of people on this sight seem to believe in are not necessary for everyone.  My first appt. with my NUT we talked specifically about whether this was a "Low carb" need to be in Ketosis like the Atkins diet to lose weight  kind of deal and she said No and I was on board.  Many people have great success on low carbs diets....especially men......but it was always the Least successful of the 100's of diet attempts I've been on.

Ok, wasn't trying to get personal referring to it as the Frisco plan... just a short cut to refer to the 800 or less cals and 40 or less carbs program.

It is not my "theory"- this is the program set for me by the bariatric team.  What I am advocating is to follow the advice of your medical team- not a bunch of well intentioned people with wildly different opinions on what works.  Now... with refernces to frying the metabolism due to the prolonged restricted calorie range... I would be happy to reference a book for perusing if desired.

Yes, I am tall and yes I have a larger sleeve.  The larger sleeve has nothing to do with calories in and calories burned through exercise.  That is a choice.  I am not bashing the Cirangle plan nor his patients- it is working for them than I am sincerly happy for their results.

But my plan is working too.  Yes, I am not in maintence and still 10 pounds from goal... but then again I will never be as far out as Frisco so that to me is a useless arguement.  If I make goal in 2 months then i am still not going to be as good at maintence most likely, at 2 years out with no regain I still won't be far enough out to say I have been succsuful in maintenece, etc.

Just stay focused on you, what your needs are, what your medical team is recommending, and what is working.  Be realistic- if it isn't working you have to adjust.

And my medical team has stellar stats too- they rival Cirangles.  But at the end of the day the surgeon isn't going to lose the weight for you- that is on you.

I've seen people lose and maintain a lot of different ways. My sleeve friend never did a "plan". Her doctor simply told her to eat less of everything and focus on protein first.

She got to goal at about 15 mos post op and is now about 15 lbs under he original goal weight.

My NUT prefers the min 60 grams of protein,  under 40 grams of carbs plan.

It doesn't work for me. The moment my carbs go over 30, my weight loss stalls.

The whole "I can eat more during maintenance because I ate a certain way during weight loss" is a load of crap, imo. Until members are IN maintenance, they need to keep their mouths shut about what they can only GUESS on right now.

Your body will let you know how much fuel it wants when you get to mainenance.

Maintenance will be different for single person.

You will figure out what works for you. Nothing wrong with trying different plans to see what works best.
