OT: chiropracter?

 Hi,

Totally off topic here...

I had some cancer removed from the back a few weeks ago, and the back has been a problem ever since.  As long as I stay off my feet I am ok, otherwise it feels like someody buried a hatchet in my mid back (area of surgery).

For whatever reason I am distrustful of chiropracters.  What is everybody's experience with them?  The teacher thing is biasing me- if I have one more parent tell me that they are having their student's ADHD treated by the chiropracter I am going to start slapping parents. (It totally doesn't work if you are a parent out there reading this.)   If I have one more person tell me to go to the chiropracter to cure my cancer I am going to run them over with my car.  You get the picture.  Now back pain seems to me more in the realm of feasible... but does it really help?  Insurance covers it all with modest copays so no issue there.

I tried one for a few weeks to see if it would help with back pain.  He was really cool .. no pressure at all like a lot of them put on you to keep you coming back.

Many of them will show you x-rays and tell you all this stuff is wrong with you to get you coming back week after week.  This one was not like that.  He put it plain and simple ... try it for a few weeks.  If it helps then come back .. if it doesnt then stop.

It did very little to help me so I dont go anymore.  It might do wonders for you though .. who knows?  Won't hurt to try it for a while.

 Thanks Kevin...

I do hear a lot of chiropractors being more salesmen then anything, so that adds to my hesitation.  But like the other poster mentioned, I also hear for people with back issues and particularly related to car accidents that it can really help.

For sure I am having a hard time straightening up, but I don't know if it is a bone thing or a muscle thing or interrelated.  I was going to just get a back brace, but then after thinking about it thought about the chiropractor thing.  I don't know... maybe I will just do a consult and see what they say.  I am just assuming though it will be the xray thing with the long list of reasons why you have to come back a few times a wee****il you are age 100.

I had a very laid back chiropractor and was very impressed with him. I could not straighten up after being hit from behind in a car accident. I went to him 2-3 x's a week to start then down to 1-2 it took 8 weeks but it worked and finally was able to sit, stand, lay down with no problem and needed no help getting up! Ask around I found mine through work.

Do you think that you may need some more time to recover from the surgery?

I can't discount that I need more time to recover, problem is students are in the classroom beginning Tuesday.  Having the year start out with a sub is a total freaking nightmare for all parties concerned- and that is even with my having access to a sub that retired from my building with 20 plus years experience in my grade.

With my other sites where cancer was removed that were left open to heal, it took a couple months for the skin to fill back in.  Given this was a much larger site on that back requiring a bunch of sutures I would assume it would take even longer.

I have never been to a chiropractor. But I did have some physical therapy to help with an elbow issue. What worked the best was the tissue massage and the rotation of heat and ice. I have heard that sometimes chiropractors can be too ruff, you end up in more pain then when you started. Maybe give yourself some more time to heal and start with a massage or a light, easy treatment with the chiro. And of course check with your doctor about the pain in the same area.

I've had great experience over the years with my chiropractor.  Most recently I was having really severe lower back pain / spasms.  He would apply electrical stimulation for 20 minutes then manually stretch my lower back.  I also had massage thereapy there.  That with a few doses of Celebrex (anti inflammatory) and I was good as new after a few visits.

I ended up calling for an appointment after reading Kevin's post and they were able to get me in today already.  (Don't know if I should be grateful for the fast appointment or concerned that they were able to get me in that quick and thus not much of a patient base.)

Anyway, I didn't go into too much detail about problem areas other than the surgery area.  After the xrays she had no difficulty pinpointing the other areas very specifically so I found that to be very encouraging overall.  Had the first adjustment- I have to say the neck portion freaked me out a bit.

But oh my goodness does my back already feel better!!!!  I am totally sold- and I really didn't want to like the chiropractor.  My neck has not felt this good in I don't know when, and the back pain is completely gone for the moment.  We will have to see how it holds up on a walk later tonight.

And who knew.  My  awesome insurance doesn't even require a copay for the visits.  I was expecting to shell out $20 a visit.  I am feeling quite blessed at the moment.

Thank you everybody for your input- it spurred me in the right direction.

I went to one for many years and he was the only thing that kept me moving. Some of it was muscle realignment and some was vertebrae eroding so eventually the degeneration won out and I ended up with a spinal stimulator, but for those years he was my life saver. You may be achey for a few days but a couple of tylenol should take care of it. I was very happy with all the treatments I got.
