When is it ok to eat salad?
I have a favorite salad that I used to get before my VSG and I was looking forward to eating it next Tuesday, my 4 weeks out when I can start my solids. I keep reading mixed posts about eating lettuce. Is this a bad thing for one one month after surgery? If so, how long should I wait?
Looking forward to your responses..
I was doing some small salads after three weeks or so - it all depends upon what the individual can tolerate and what the surgeon's plan permits. I generally used chopped spinach instead of lettuce for its' somewhat better nutritional value (for what it's worth with such a small amount, but good habits start small...) but I also tried bits of restaurant salad fairly early out with no ill effect - YMMV.

Theres a huge difference of opinion on salad. If you are talking the kind of garden salad or a caesar that is mostly leafy and vegetables - I would tell you thats empty calories and youre better off skipping it and filling your sleeve with dense protein.
If you are talking about a grilled chicken breast salad or something else with a lean protein as part of a salad. If you follow the eating rules you are going to eat the protein first. At 4 weeks you will fill up on protein and not eat any veggies or lettuce. Then you dodn't eat a salad - you ate protein served on a bed of greens.
My advice - get the protein its what you need and the habit you need to start.

I think its best to ask your nut/surgeon n follow YOUR guidelines.
Mine...All plant matter (carbs) had to be cooked 0-3 months post op.
fruits, vegetables with seeds on or in them not until 2 months post op (regular diet).
RAW produce...fruits, veggies, nuts/seeds at 3 months post op.
Salads were a staple in my diet (almost daily) thru the rapid fat loss phase...into ~2 years out.. til I burnt out on em! HA!
Processed salad dressings: Check labels!! usually super high calorie, sodium content (inconducive to weight loss ,-) ..ingredients like ..high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, preservatives and colors like EDTA, titanium dioxide maybe of interest to you...on your avoid/limit list
better choices..oil/vinegar, salsas for taco salads, lo-cal "lite" , SF ...visit natural grocers
some VSGrs here use Waldens..kinda high sodium to me..but Ive READ good things about em as far as taste..never tried em myself tho.
