So if this liquid diet is supposed to shrink my liver, why are there so many carb options on there...malt o meal, oatmeal etc?  Seems to me if should be an all protein diet, but then I'm not the doctor.  Really, does anyone know the reason behind the "liquid" only?  I'm somewhat worried that i will consume the wrong liquids during this phase and actually make the surgery more difficult.

Your liver breaks down fat....most overweight people have a fatty liver due to our diets...so it's larger due to the volume of fat it has to process and breakdown. The goal is not to limit carbs for your liver, it's to limit fat. I think a lot of drs. Also put people on liquid to get them used to it and to change their eating habits....it also does depend on how overweight you are...I am a lightweight and didn't have a pre-op liquid diet or low carb prior to when I checked in to the hospital. Hope this helps explain it...good luck!

Do you have a list of specific products you can use?

I am on three protein shakes a day -- only from a select list -- and one small, measured solid-food meal a day.  Otherwise I can have hydrating liquids and SF Jello and SF popsicles.  The only carb I'm allowed is 1/2 cup of a brown rice, sweet potato or quinoa (don't even know what that is).  No milk, no cheese, no eggs.

I actually called the nutritionist yesterday to remind me why I can't have pasta.  Need that pep talk.

I don't, mostly because I didn't do anything pre-op...but I see a lot of people on here eating low carb, high protein (eg chicken breasts w broccoli) and a lot of veggies per surgery...along with protein shakes...try to follow your drs plan...as best you can, be easy on yourself and do the best you can...

For reference, I use Muscle Milk and EAS shakes, both lite and carb control...I'm three days post-op...so far so good! S

So lucky you didn't have to do anything pre-op-I'm on the lower end of the weight scale for this surgery and at one time the nutritionist suggested maybe I could do a modified plan as my liver likely wasn't as fatty as some.  But the doctor never said either way.  I would love to be able to have some chicken or tuna at least once a day...but I'm not going to risk it without calling the nutritionist.  Scared to mess up!

You won't mess up all liquids would have been so hard before surgery...I think I had at least 5 dinners saying good bye to food After surgery liquids are a cake walk...and really all I can imagine having at 5 days out! I think your dr would like you to do as best you can ... If you shrink your liver it's easier for them to move it out of the way so that they can get at your tummy. My dr literally said to me...all bariatric patients have fatty livers...no pre-op diet needed, but don't go too nuts

Not all...My liver was just fine. No fat at all according to my surgeon. And I also had no pre op diet at all.
