Increasing protein vs reducing calories - which is the better trade-off?

I'm always struggling to make decisions about whether it is better to get extra protein in or to keep the calories lower.  It's the great debate I have on a daily basis!  Most days, I eat 575-650 calories and take in 70-80 grams of protein.

Here is an example of the debate:  I've eaten 575 calories with 70 grams of protein.  Should I stick with my minimum calorie level or should I try to increase my protein by 10 grams by adding 100 or so calories?  This one is driving me crazy, so just wondering of there is a method I can use to make that decision rationally!

Thanks all.  Looking forward to your input.

Thanks to Spencerella for asking this question and to Frisco for the clear answer. I have mulled this over many times myself. I have noticed you and I often have similar questions in mind (whether voiced or not). ;0)

Just curious - could you post what you are eating to get 70 gr of protein with 575 calories. How many carbs a day? I struggle to keep calories under 800 since my surgeon and nut do not allow protein shakes after 1 month post op. I am always looking for new protein sources. Thanks.

I do supplement with a Premier shake in the mornings to give me an extra 30 grams.

Paula. I just realized I didn't completely answer. Typically I try for 3 oz of canned fish for lunch and 3oz of meat for dinner. If my sleeve doesn't cooperate with those amounts, I usually turn to cottage cheese for the rest of my protein. Occasionally I eat 1 oz of jerky for 15 grams at just 80 calories, but I prefer lower salt protein sources.
