Protein anyone????
Hey OH!! I have a couple of questions. I am 16 days post-op gastric sleeve and am starting on pureed foods. I have been able to tolerate refried beans, cheese (chewed till it almost dissolves) and juicy eggs. My question is the scale is moving very slow and want to make the most of my honeymoon phase. I just keep thinking "protein, protein, and protein". My question is, is everyone actually adding up how much protein they are getting? Like i already count my shakes that I get and the number in the mootopia milk that i use, but since we are on only like a tablespoon of food, is anyone else actually figuring out how much protein that small of an item carries? Or do you guys just guesstimate? I want to make sure i am getting enough but not become a crazy person with keeping track. Also, do ya'll keep track of calories as well. Maybe those in the later phases like a year out or 6 months out, but what about people in my stage? All the comments ya'll could give would be appreciated. Also, is anybody else's taste buds going out of control? I use to like extremely spicy/hot food, but since i am starting easy and treating my tummy like a baby, I am trying to lay off of pepper/spice. But I noticed when I purchased mashed potatoes and gravy along with a canned refried bean, it seemed extremely spicy. To the point i thought it would hit my stomach hard, so I didnt fini**** REally only had a taste. But even things with salt (no added salt) seem to be salty to me. Have others experienced this taste explosion as well???

not sure when you started your ticker, but if you are 36 lbs out since operation you might be losing too much! if this amount includes a 2-3 weeks pre-op diet ... you are probably doing very well. 5-10lbs a week is what i was told to expect, starting from 350lbs
use myfitnesspal for track your protein, it's really simple and takes just a minute or 2. even has an iphone/android app. it tracks calories and other things as well, but dont have to pay much attention to that right now. jsut make sure you are less than 40 carbs and under 800cal (like if you are taking in 1200 cal, make sure your are eating right)
not sure what your nutrition plan is, but i'm also 16 days out. I'm set for 125ml (half cup) of pureed meat and 60ml of pureed vegetable per meal. today is first day so i probably ate less than half that. but it's not an inconsequential amount of food or protein and you should track it.
Justpete,
Thanks for your comment and congratulations on your surgery! I think I messed my ticker up on day one when I signed up and cant seem to get it to adjust. It keeps track of my weight since I weighed 291. It doesnt reflect my start weight at 312. I dont think it does anyways. I went to postop appt today and my weight since surgery was down 18 pounds, so it reflects my total weightloss including my preop dieting. My surgeon told me today to only concentrate on protein and water now and when I start on solid foods then start looking at calories. I will have a followup with him about a week after I'm suppose to start solid foods so we will see! Wish me luck and thanks for responding. Wishing you continued success as well!!!
Exactly what Bella Fein said. I weigh and measure every bite and place it all in My Fitness Pal ... http://www.myfitnesspal.com/
I have done this starting day 5 post op and logged minutes ago and I am about 11 months post op. I know everything that I ate for just about the whole last year. I will continue obsessively to use My Fitness Pal and log everything. I think that it is extremely important because if I start to gain weight I will have a record of where I went wrong.
Do yourself the huge favor of recording everything as close as you can. Don't worry if it isn't 100% accurate ... just always make your best guess and if necessary err on the side of saying you had a little more than you actually did.
Best of luck.
What Bella and Wildcat said. Weigh and measure everything and track every bite on myfitnesspal.com
I never thought I would have it in me to do it but I am doing it...every single day. And its actually easy. Just becomes part of your routine. I would advise logging your planned food before you eat it so that you actually see what it is in breakdown of calories, protein and carbs and fat. You may decide on making another choice. I have done that several times.

It is not crazy to track your food. It is very important to track your food, especially until you are sure you are 100% getting all of your protein, water, etc. in. You need to weigh/measure your food also. Guessing is going to cause you problems down the road. There will be days that your eyes are going to be bigger than you stomach and if you don't pay attention to what you put in your mouth it will be coming back up. When you are on solids which you are getting pretty close, you need to be logging everything. You can go in once a day and enter everything, it will also help you to plan. You are also going to stall and may want help to try and break it, we are going to ask you how much protein, water, carbs are you getting each day. Don't look at this as being crazy, look at it as being accountable and providing you with much needed information.
