Some say yes, some say no..... Some say it stretches the sleeve, some say it doesn't. So, what's your doc say? What's your experience?? I really miss my straws!! I miss my soda too, but no WAY I would ru**** this early on!!

The way that it was explained to me is that when you suck from a straw, you create suction and this can pull on your staple line.  Whether it's true or not...it put enough fear into my that I ditched all my straws LOL

I am almost four months post-op. I don't remember being told not to use a straw after surgery, but I didn't because of all that I read on here. I asked about straws, and soda at my six week post-op visit. I was told straws and gum are fine. Diet soda would be fine if it was one or two a week - but not with meals.

I now use a straw once in awhile and chew gum daily with no problems. However, I don't want to risk going back to my Diet Coke habit, so I choose not to partake.

Some use straws and some don't. Some swear they can use a straw and not inhale any air. Whatever.

Anyone that drinks soda after having surgery, hasn't learned a thing.

I don't think drinking soda is a lack of intelligence. Personally I hope I am eventually able to enjoy all things in moderation. The moderation my sleeve is there to help with. Just IMO.

My opinion is that "Moderation" is the most dangerous word in WL and maintenance.

How well did it work pre-op?

More people have a problem with this approach, not saying you will..... just opens up a can of worms and so many negative possibilities.

Moderation ----------> How long is a piece of string ???

It didn't work pre op because I didn't practice it. I ate until I was sick. Meaning a half or whole large pizza - instead of one slice cut in half (making my brain think it was 2).

Last statement is pretty judgmental, yes?  Got the okay from the doc/NUT drink diet soda, have lost a crapload of weight, and still capable of abstract thought.  Think it's gonna be okay!

As far as carbonated drinks go.. I was told, never again.  The carbonation can expand your sleeve.  Bums me out because I love carbonated water with a twist of lime.  As far as any kind of soda goes.. I'm done.  No regular for sugar reasons, and no diet because of all of the studies I've seen lately, would never want to pick up an old habit I kicked.  But I do miss my carbonated water.
