I am nine days post-op. I am on the full liquids stage of my diet. I have had no issues with anything I have tried. Tomato soup, milk, cream of chicken soup, peanut butter and a few others. I have no issues consuming my 3oz protein shot with about an ounce of water at the same time. I have not found a protein powder that I like the taste of, so still trying to defeat that devil. My concern happened today. I was at a restaurant with my family. I ordered a glass of water with no ice and some beef and mushroom soup. The soup had ground beef in it so I was only able to get maybe 2 teaspoons of just broth. My son had some chicken n dumplings that had a broth. I ate that as well as a few teaspoons of the soup from my moms Soup beans. In addition I was able to consume almost all of my 8 ounce glass of water. This was over maybe a 45 minute period. I have never felt full or like I needed to stop or could not handle anymore. Am I abnormal? Should I I have been able to consume that much in one sitting? I am starting to wonder if I really had surgery or was it my imagination.

There is a pyloric valve in the bottom of your stomach that doesn't stop liquids from passing on to the intestines.  Therefore you had no restriction.

The valve only closes when food enters the stomach so that the food in the stomach can be digested.  Once digested and in a liquid state the pyloric valve opens and passes things along.

This is the reason that we don't eat and drink at the same time anymore.  Down the road when you are back on solid foods and you eat something like chicken and then if you were to drink that will help that chicken in the stomach get to a liquid state quicker and therefore pass things on sooner than if you didn't drink anything.  This in turn makes you hungry sooner after the meal than if you didn't take that drink while eating.

Thank you so much! I have learned something new! I guess I panicked a little bit. But to not have a feeling that I needed to stop scared me. I immediately begin to think that I was not going to be successful if I could still eat so much! I honestly cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge!

One thing I hear a lot of on here is always under eat your sleeve meaning just eat till satisfied don't eat till full. Now I know that it is hard when your on liquids but just try and eat until you feel satisfied.

Best wishes

This post really concerns me. The reason being - why didn't your surgeon tell you not to drink while eating???? I haven't even had my consultation and at my educational seminar, my surgeon stressed the importance of this. Wait 30 minutes after eating. I have also read that on these forums over and over. I am just so surprised there are surgeons out there that perform these surgeries and do not teach their patients the basics for success. Crazy and unfortunate...

Glad you came on here and found an answer though

If you're on liquids only, virtually everything is "drinking."

As stated at this point all is liquid.  As far as feeling full, your stomach has been cut from top to bottom and so have your nerves.  I went thru the same and even knowing what was going on I felt like you.  You just have to measure everything to make sure you don't overeat and hurt your sleeve.  I, now a 6 months, feel full on very little but back where you are, I could have put way to much in if I didn't measure as I didn't "feel.

Good luck and congratulations on your sleeve.

You have received some pretty good advice. I would suggest that you look up Frisco's post on the pyloric valve that is frequently reposted. There is a lot of great information in there for you.

what concerns me most is some of the food choices I see you making in this post. I see a lot of calorie dense foods - Peanut Butter, Cream Soups, carb heavy choices. Is there a nutritionist or diet plan from your surgeon? This is the time you should be detoxing from carbs and starting the high protein low carb diet.

All of the foods that I mentioned are in my diet plan from my surgeons office. I have only tried these foods. I am not eating them on a regular basis. I for the most part only drink my protein shots and crystal light or water. The thing I have eaten the most of is tomato soup. I bought those drinkable ones from Campbell's. it is a 10 ounce serving and it takes 3 sittings to consume the whole thing and that is not even in one day. I am only taking in about 400 calories a day.
