Protein bars

I came home from work yesterday and there were two packages waiting for me.  I had no idea what they were, and the return address of 'Recharge" didn't give me a clue.  I opened one of the boxes as soon as I got inside, and inside was crack cocaine....oops....I mean protein bars.  My eyes widened.  My heartbeat quickened.  I had a flash of memory of sending for a free sample of the bars, and then I proceeded to inhale the crack cocaine...oops....I mean protein bars.  All three of them.  I sat in a stupor.  What had I just done?  I'd quit taking drugs....oops....I mean candy bars (because face it, they really are candy bars) months ago.  How could I so easily have been lured back just by their unexpected presence in my home?

I didn't open the second box, because I know if I did, those would disappear just as quickly as the first ones did.  I will take them to work today and give them away.

I am an addict.  I've always know that, but it was made starkly apparent last night.  I will always be an addict, hopefully in recovery from now on.

Jane, that's a great self-realization, albeit coming to you the hard way.   Good decision to get them out of the house.  If you can't give them away at work, do yourself a favor and toss them.

Protein bars would be like crack for me as well, so I won't touch 'em.  I could easily see myself inhaling several hundred calories' worth of protein bars in one sitting, all the while telling myself, but it's protein!

Thanks for sharing this story.  I often feel one-small-step away from blowing the whole weight-loss process.  That is why I am so resolved to following my program without cheating.  I believe this food addiction is as serious as alcoholism or other addictions.  I never want to go back to the out-of-control feeling of obesity.

It is good that you realize the power of the addiction and I wish you well with getting back on track.  You've been doing so well for yourself, your weight and your health.  You deserve to be healthy.

I am totally back on track here this morning, and I don't think I'll be having any problem staying on it.  I just need to keep the drugs out of the house, and stay away from the pushers!

I so understand this!  I have some Atkins bars to have around at work -- and I literally cannot eat them.  They are just like candy -- with their little chocolate chips and crunchy texture.

I had the same reaction to quest bars (think Tootsie Roll!), but I am able to manage that OK, since I need to have something around for emergencies!

We will get through this!  Great work in getting rid of the bars!  I'm going to ask around at my office and see if I can find a home for my Atkins bars!

I must be an anomoly....I don't like them at all!!  eecckk !!  I bought a whole bunch at first, being lured in with names like "S'mores", "Peanut Butter whatever", etc....but I commend you for getting rid of the crack, uh, bars, as soon as you did/do.  good for you!!!

I am often sited on here saying that protein bars are the devil!!
Well...this weekend I was cleaning out my pantry and found some Atkins bars I can eat...( nut allergy) I bought them when I started the process and forgot all about them...opened it up broke a third off and OH MY GOD!!!, yummy deliciousness!!!
Ate the whole thing over the course of the day, but at 210 calories, IDK if I want to even try to fit these in as a snack or meal replacement...however if eating one on Halloween keeps me from trying to pilfer my kids stash then maybe they will come in handy on an as needed basis...

Jane - I know EXACTLY what you mean!   I've found I can have some Quest bars around...but not the ones that have anything "chocolate" in them like the cookie dough, brownie, etc.  Even though I can only comfortably eat 1/2 a one, I will eat the whole thing.   And they spike cravings in me for more.  I will think about them all day long and eat one when it's not on my plan.

The fruity flavored ones don't do that to me so I keep a few of those on hand because hubby likes them and I can grab one if I have to travel somewhere for work or for an emergency.  Regardless of the flavor, they flat out stop my weight loss.  I can count on the scale coming to a screeching halt for a couple days when I eat one.

I recognized years ago that I'm a compulsive eater and go to my OA meetings every week, have a sponsor, work the Steps, etc.  That, along with occasional therapy, keeps my head in the right place when it comes to food.

Another addiction I discovered this weekend...macadamia nuts.  Oh boy!  Can't have those in the house anymore either!!
