Need vitamin help
Now that I'm no longer eligible for the DS with my insurance, I'm going to have the sleeve Dec. 13. My surgeon says take a high-potency multi-vit with iron and calcium w/ D. I'm wondering if this is for real? It seems that Vitalady boat-load of supplements. I know I will probably have some malnutrition the first 2 months until I can get up to speed. I don't want to get into a mess, but is it really necessary to take all those expensive vitamins after the first 2 months?
My surgeon said to take vitamins and supplements as dictated by blood work. If you don't need them, you don't take them. I started off with the whole panoply of vites and supps and am now taking only vitamin A dry from Vitalady coz my blood work showed that I needed that. Nothing to do with surgery by the way. I take an occasional Centrum multi. I have never needed iron and still don't. I take a B12 once every couple of weeks, a vitamin D3 every month (50,000 ius) or so coz my blood showed I had too much of it and too much D and calcium may lead to kidney stones so I scaled back on both. Calcium citrate also once in a while. And all my labs are now in normal range.
I take 2 Kirkland(Cost****ids chewable multi, 4 Walmart brand calcium citrate , 1 iron pill, and once weekly b 12 drops
the multies are $9.00 the calcium $9.00 they last more than 1 month , the iron is about $7.00 for a 10 month supply and the b 12 was $4.00 for a 1 year supply
you will need them for your whole life unless you labs show that you don't need them
all my supplements where ok ed by my surgeon and nut
As of my last labs, I am to take the following: Calcium Citrate 600 mg twice a day, a high quality multi vitamin once a day, B-12 1000 every day (my B12 runs a little low). Compared to my specialty Asthma medications (over $500.00 a month co-pay for three medications!!!) , plus my other daily medications (approximately $180.00 a month).... The $20 bucks I invest in Vitamins is nothing!!!

With a DS, you do because of the malabsorptive component of that procedure. With just a sleeve, there is not malabsorption, but due to the small quantities of food you are able to consume, you're not getting in all your nutrients/vitamins/minerals from the little food you are eating so supplementation is necessary.
That said, I take a chewable multivitamin from Celebrate vitamins 2x daily, a calcium supplement from CVS 2x daily, an iron supplement from Celebrate 1x nightly, and a sublingual B12 from Target 2x weekly. I adjust how much of the B12 and iron I take based on my labs, which my PCP has me doing every 3 months. My surgeon's office told me no iron was needed but at my 3 month followup at my PCP, my iron levels were so low my doc wondered how I was able to function! So now I take iron every night, and I'll see how I'm doing next month when I have my 6 month follow up with both my PCP and my surgeon.
Good luck. Vitamin supplementation is as expensive as you want it to be. The way I see it, I'm swapping the cost of prescription medications for the cost of vitamins, and I don't mind doing that at all.
Thanks for that explanation. I don't have a with buying the vitamins, I just want to make sure I'm taking the right ones and not just making expensive urine. IMO, there is no reason to take those supplements that I don't need. Coming from the DS mindset, it is a different way of thinking. I've already got some good chewable Calcium citrate +D and B12. Looks like I just need to find a good multi-vit and iron.
