I'm consuming way too many carbs!
I'm trying to consume from my list of approved foods, but I plugged today's food into MFP and even though my sugars are pretty low, my total carbs are very high. I think it's the dairy products mostly that are shooting up my carbs. And today I had ff refried beans that are a great source of protein, but also a complex carb. Can any vets weigh in on what kinds of foods they ate during the purée stage to get in all the protein but avoid having too many carbs?
Fat free greek fage with sugar free Torani and unflavored whey mixed in
Isopure (no carbs)
Premier Protein shakes (very low carb)
scrambled egg whites with feta
Pretty much lived on that for a few weeks.

I have to say, I didn't worry a whole lot about carbs till I "graduated" to all foods. I thought of those immediate post-surgery stages as gradually re-introducing foods to a seriously injured organ (the stomach), slowly and gently, not necessarily as part of my weight loss. I.e., it was part of the surgical recovery period. You're eating so little right now that you're likely losing weight anyway, and on my plan it was only 30 days.
That's not to say I ate ice cream and milkshakes. I still concentrated on good sources of (soft/mushy/pureed) protein, but tiny bits of refried beans, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, and similar foods were on the menu, as tolerated. Once I got to where I could eat dense protein and some veg's, beans, grains, and other high-carb items lost their place on the menu, and I never looked back. (I remember how wonderful that first soft-scrambled egg tasted, so heavenly!)
This will be somewhat controversial, and many people follow the low-carb life immediately out of the gate, but this is what worked for me.
And I know that my calories are low right now. I got in a little more than 600 today. MFP says I'm not getting adequate nutrition and I'm "putting my body in starvation mode." But I haven't seen a change on the scales since Thursday, and I know I should be happy with the 11 pounds I lost the first week and not weighing constantly, but I can't help but feeling like I'm sabotaging myself.
Haha, not getting adequate calories is the definition of weight loss - your body will burn your stored fat. Not getting adequate *nutrition* on the other hand, meaning protein mostly, and vites/minerals, would be concerning if it goes on for very long. Like months or years. THAT's starvation. But for the small period where you're in staged re-introduction, you're fine. I too calculated calories (on paper at the time) in those early days, but truthfully if you're getting adequate hydration, you're fine for a few weeks.
Weight loss doesn't proceed in a nice, linear fashion, unfortunately. For me it was fits and starts, or stairsteps as some people call it. Just keep on keeping on, and the magic will happen.
Thanks for your reply. I really needed that. I didn't log my vitamins today because I threw up when I took them, so I didn't know if I got them or not. I know nutritionally I'm not going to be able to get in all the suggested nutrients for the day at 600 calories, but I know that's why they have us take the vitamins - filling in the gaps. I guess I've been getting it wrong for so long, I keep assuming I'm going to screw it up somehow. Sometimes it takes someone else's words to put things in perspective.
You aren't going to like it but.....
for the soft food phase it was eggs for breakfast and 3 ounces of canned albacore tuna 3x a day. Sometimes I substituted some pink salmon from a pouch but I don't recommend that. I say you won't like it because it's bland, boring, and after two weeks of it you'll likely never eat canned tuna again.
However, it's effective. It solves any protein problems and cards will be nearly non-existent

I went in to see my surgeon for my first post op visit on Thursday and I was feeling very conflicted about their eating plan vs. a low/no carb eating plan. I have not lost any weight in two weeks and I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago. But what he said sort of calmed me down and made me worry less about getting in ketosis and fat burning mode. To put it simply, he just said ,"I'm not really concerned with how much weight you are losing right now, I'm concerned about getting you healed properly, once you are all healed up, then we can focus on cutting carbs and fat burning. " So, I've kind of piped down about it. (for now)
