Not enough protein = eating when not hungry?
I had a period of weeks where the thought of food made me queasy. It did pass eventually. I couldn't drink any shakes after surgery. My tummy was not up for it. I did find I could put unflavored protein powder in chicken broth and that worked. I ended up putting protein powder in everything - jello, pudding, yogurt, mashed cauliflower. I was able to make my protein goals thru these.
I think you need to keep eating in those times when you don't want to. You need to building blocks for healing.
best of luck,
Carol

Another vote for Syntrax Nectar. I cannot abide the taste or texture of protein shakes. I've never been much of a milkshake drinker anyway, and though I tried valiantly to make up some flavorful shakes with milk, almond milk, PB2, Torano flavors, Crystal Light and various unflavored, choc & vanilla protein powders, I just found them all VILE. At first I didn't like the Syntrax either, but then somebody here on OH taught me some tricks and now I drink it every day!
I love SNs Fuzzy Navel! It's a mix of peach with orange juice flavor. Syntrax Nectars are thin like juice or koolaid. The first thing I learned is to mix it in a coffee go-cup so as to limit me from smelling the protein (not that SN has a lot of protein smell, but I was so averse to it I would just gag.) Next, I mixed 12 ounces of water with 1/2-3/4 scoop and shake it up. It dissolves almost immediately. Now, it does froth up but if I put it in the fridge for an hour the froth dies down. When I'm ready to drink it, I tilt the cup a couple of times to make sure it's mixed, add a few cubes of ice and I'm ready to go. At this point I can mix a whole scoop with about 12 ounces of water and it tastes as close to juice as it can be. I swear, if it had some alcohol in it it WOULD be a fuzzy navel!
Lots of people swear by SNs lemonade. Now that is one of their flavors that I really can't stand. Not to worry. They have a lot of good flavors. I like the Twisted Cherry, Wild Grape, Apple Ecstasy and Pink Grapefruit. 1 scoop equals 24gms protein. It's easy to get 1-2 of these down each day. And it won't last forever. I'm 8 weeks post-op and I'm getting well over half my protein from food now.

Thanks for the really detailed instructions! Hopefully avoiding the smell will help some, so I'll pick up a shaker bottle and give that a shot. :)

i hated my protein drinks and had to force myself to get them down. but its worth it - your weight loss will be faster with more protein and you will lose less muscle mass. I used to take a chocolate protein powder and add extra unsweetened coco powder and blend it with ice. makes it less sickeningly sweet. my hubby used to blend his with unsweetened coconut milk. gives a creamier texture. i also used to take a sugar free pudding, add an equal amount of plain greek yogurt and sneak in a little protein powder. tastes like cheesecake. i also got unflavored soy protein powder from the health food store. its good to blend into soup and is less icky than whey protein. you can get egg white based protein powder too.
as far as not being hungry, you still gotta get your protein in. i think its much different than when we used to eat when not hungry before wls. thats when i used to eat candy and cookies and chips. no way would i have pigged out on poached chicken or unsweetened greek yogurt.
so keep at the protein. its worth it. i am over 4 years out and still at goal, bmi of 21. i still do the "protein first" thing. gl. diane
I bought a ninja right after surgery. I make mine with frozen fruit and some yogurt and almond milk. It is like drinking an actual shake.
Have you tried Isopure Zero Carb unflavored protein powder? I like it because there is absolutely no flavor. The consistency is like powdery cake flour. One scoop is 26g of protein. I use one half scoop and mix it in my Greek yogurt. I can't taste it or feel any consistency change once it's stirred in (and I use the Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt).
I know everyone's different and some textures, smells and flavors can put you over the edge. Hope you find something that works.

unless your appetite e er comes back, eating when not hungry no longer applies to you. Chances are, you were jot eating protein and such when you were eating when not. Hungry before, right?
i am almost 4 years out,and I can count on one hand the. Umber of times,I have been hungry, seriously. If I didn't eat protein by the timeron my phone,I would starve to death.
If you wait to be hungry, you also might starve to death. You have to adopt a new mind set about not eating when you are not hungry. That is old school for those of us who have had a VSG. We now have to eat something healthy when our alarm says it is time to eat.

Another vote for Syntrax Nectar. I like the lemonade and fruit punch, and the mix with water. Quest bars are highly addictive.
