Not sure if anyone has experience with antidepressants or not, but here's my issue..I've been on Celexa for a year now and have been doing great with it up until a month or two ago (was sleeved 4 months ago)...I know that we don't have the absorption issues like RNYers do, but its just a little strange that this med has pooped out on me...could it be related to the VSG or maybe just time for a new med?

With all the hormones that your fat cells release during rapid weight loss could be the problem.

Ive been struggling with depression...before you assume your meds stopped working, have you considered what you are going through mentally right now? The whole WL process can bring up some deep issues that make us very uncomfortable...pills cant change that.

But always talk to your psych...mine told me to call immediately if i ever feel like my meds stop working or if my symptoms change/get worse.

I deal with depression and have had meds stop working long before my WLS. There was a need to change up my meds during those times. I think that meds need to be changed for various reasons.

I am 7.5 months out and my current ****tail is still working for me. Just my personal experience. Perhaps you need to check with your psych as well as your surgeon. I rather doubt malabsorption is occurring although there is a lot going on within your system.

I'm on Lexapro, which is very similar to Celexa. I'm 3 months out from my sleeve and it seems to be working OK. I've had a couple of pills crap out on me after a year or so, while there's one med I've been taking for over 10 with no issues!

I'd definitely say it's time for a check-in with your psychiatrist. I'm meeting with mine monthly for a while after surgery just to keep an eye on things as I adjust to the hormone dump, potential absorption and balance issues, and the like. It's not at all uncommon to have to bump up a dose after a while as your body acclimates to a med, so maybe you can try that first before the "fun" of switching pills?

This was a huge issue for me, and it WAS related to absorption. The way I understand it, some antidepressants need stomach acid to dissolve them, and the part of the stomach that produces that acid has been removed. So after my surgery, I in effect went off my meds cold turkey. I went into a horrific depression and when we finally figured it out, psych started having me crush my antidepressants. That has worked fine.

A better solution would be to take them in liquid form, but the ones I take aren't available in liquid, so I crush them and just deal with the horrid taste. Talk to your doc asap! I think this is something that needs to be made more clear. I too didn't make the connection because I thought VSG didn't cause malabsorption.
