Invited to dinner
If I'm comfortable, I tell people what my limitations are, and plan ahead. If not, I eat before, and then just have a green veggie or salad at the meal. I always eat before parties, so that I have the restriction to help me thru the first couple hours of the party. Then I can eat a little at the end without over-doing it.
good luck,
Carol

Yes, I think it depends on how comfortable you are with the people you are having dinner with. If you really want to go but don't want to tell them all, I would go and eat the little bit I could if there were soft foods and pass the rest to my napkin (or my husband!) Try to keep conversation moving so it's more about that then the food. If you are comfortable with everyone, you could tell them something. Either about the surgery openly, or tell them that you have some stomach restrictions in your diet right now. These days everyone has those with gluten free, vegan, and other special diets. Or, if you are very uncomfortable tell them that the date doesn't work, but get something on the calendar later this summer when you have a few more choices.
We are invited to dinner on April 30 and I am 4 days post-op and decided to just tell the hostess. I may tell the rest but I am pretty open.
"I'd love to come, but I'm afraid I'm on a very restricted diet right now. Is it okay if I bring my own food so that you aren't inconvenienced?"

This has happened to me. I just ate very little of the protein that was served and a couple bites of veggies, and explained I wasn't feeling very hungry. I was at someone's house who I am more comfortable doing something like that, though, too. They don't know about my surgery, but it was a very casual dinner invite.
If it were someone else I'd probably decline the invite. I've had people over here, too, which is so much easier to deal with/explain.
I would feel crushed if I invited a friend for dinner and they told me none of the food I cooked looked appetizing. I hope the OP manages to find something less insulting to say!
