I had a VSG in June 2011..I weighed 237 pounds then...I got down to 179 pounds...now, I have regained everything plus some, and weigh 246...I am SO discouraged and upset with myself for letting this happen...Has anyone else had this happen to them? What did you do??

I am very sorry this has happened to you.

I am not sure I can be much help as I had RNY and know essentially nothing about your surgery but have you consulted with your surgeon or nutritionist?

I am sure someone will answer soon who can really help you but I wish you the very best!

I'm sorry that you've had this experience and I hope that others who have had the same experience will chime in!

I think the first thing you should do is figure out why you got off track and try to address those issues.  Is it a physical issue?  Talk with your surgeon - check to see if there's anything going on internally that could be causing problems.  Is just a lack of understanding of your eating plan?  Talk with your nutritionist and have her set up a better/clearer guide for you.  Is it more of a mental thing?  Talk with a therapist who specializes in disordered eating to help get your head back into the game.

You can do it, and you don't have to do it alone!

Would you be willing to share with the group here why you think this occurred and over what time periods you lost/gained weight?  I think everyone could benefit from experience.

I'm guessing you did okay with the food to start, but at some point slipped back into the foods like chips, etc.  Exercise, stress, or other life changes could have played a role also.  However, no one can really tell your story but you and it would help others.

I would agree with the others that a trip back to the doctor is probably called for.  Perhaps a second doctor if you're not comfortable with the original one.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  Did you have some stress in your life that took you off your program?  Please let us know what you think happened.  This is a very big fear for many of us.  Good luck with getting back on track.

I will a absolutely share what happened...I went thru a very stressful separation after I lost the weight...I turned to beer to soothe my pain...a BIG no no....and in turn, ate more after consuming copious amounts of alcohol...I should have turned to exercise to relieve stress...but I didn't...now my home life is stable and I want to lose the weight...I don't know where to start...go back on a liquid diet or just start counting protein grams again...it's so hard and I feel defeated..btw, thank you for the replies...I had forgotten how supportive OH can be!!!

Going back to a liquid diet at this point might be super challenging.  Instead, you might be better off just "getting back to basics."  Track everything you eat - low carbs, high protein, lots of water.

I'm sorry to hear about your separation.  From what I understand, it's easy for us as compulsive eaters to replace one compulsion with another, i.e., food to alcohol.

I think your experience is incredibly helpful to all of us trying to reach our goals and to see how things can be go off track.  I'm heard some people talk about how they can't wait to get to maintenance so they can start drinking again.  This should be a wake up call to us all.  Thank you for being so open and honest.

I think the best way to start is to track everything you eat and drink using My Fitness Pal or some other food logging application.  It will help you to understand what you're doing and then you can make the corrections from there.

The very basics (at least for me) are:

At least 80 grams of protein per day

30-40 grams of carbs per day

At least 64 ounces of water per day

EXERCISE!  I hate it, but I do it.

Try to remember back before you had your surgery why you did it.  Write down your goals now so you have a visual reminder of what you want to achieve.  Don't feel defeated.  Life is often a struggle and you just need to refocus on where you want to be.  YOU.  CAN.  DO.  IT.
