How much exercise is too much?

I'm a homemaker with no kids, so it's easy enough for me to devote a few hours each week day to exercise!  If I had a "real job," it would be significantly more challenging :/

What do I think? HMMM, I want to be like you when I grow up! I can't advise but I just wanted to say that. I know it feels good after a good workout.

I have said it before, but I think sustainability is important. It sounds like it is sustainable for you right now. It is important to avoid injury because that is hard getting knocked out of the game. For me, in addition to sustainability, I have the idea of always having something to add or push harder in the future-when weight loss needs a kick. For example, if I did 3 hours in the future, could I push to 4 if I have a stall? Nope. Also, right now, at 600 cal, I will likely lose just as much doing 1 hr as I would doing 2. Soon you might be able to do intervals and strength training more and that would decrease the time. Just my thoughts

Thanks for your input!  For me, the exercise and weight loss aren't connected at all in my brain, so I don't have the mindset of "could I do more if I had a stall?"  I'm exercising because I know it's great for my organs and muscles and it just so happens that the weight loss I've experienced allowed me to do these awesome exercises that I want to be doing :D

I think only you really know the answer to that question. Is this a sustainable amount of exercise? Sounds like it is, so that's a non issue. You've chosen things you like to do, so that's also a moot point! Two for two here....

My question for you is how sore is sore? In my mind there is good sore and there is bad sore. Good sore is muscle soreness that I can feel, but does not inhibit any activities that I wish to do. For instance, if I reach up to get something out of the cupboard, I might feel a tightness and slight twinge of soreness in my pecs and shoulders, if I've worked them the day before to exhaustion. Bad sore is soreness, tightness, even pain that inhibits activities that I need to do on a daily basis, e.g. bend over to pick up dog bowls off the floor, play sports with the kids at school, get up out of my reading chair. Stiffness to me is also a bad thing (if it's a deep stiffness that doesn't vanish almost instantly with use) and is an indication that I maybe have pushed too hard that day or the day before.

Someone mentioned above in a previous post about recovery days. You know what exercises you do and in what sequence, etc... If you are allowing yourself adequate recovery time and are still constantly sore as you say, I would rethink your exercise. I disagree with the theory that the soreness will go away if you keep at it - unless keeping at it includes adequate recovery.

That's a really interesting point about types of soreness - I will work at paying attention to these things.  I appreciate it!
