Fluids-Timing with VSG

This is from a case study of 1....... me.

4.5 years out and NOT a vet Just a guy trying to fit in the same size Levis everyday.

Not telling you to do this as it may go against the advise from your program.

Many programs say no drinking 30-60 minutes before eating and or 30-60 after eating.

My timing tends to be different than these recommendations and seems (without a doubt) to work best for me.

I'll drink all the way up to my first bite..... ok, maybe a few minutes.

Reason: Pre meal my pyloric valve is wide open, and fluids flow right through.

After my meal I try not to resume fluids for about 2+ hours and certainly way more than 30 minutes.

Reason: After eating a dense protein you pyloric valve closes, holding that food in for pre-digestion.

The longer this food sits in your sleeve the longer duration of satiety you will have.

After 20-40 minutes or so depending on the food your pyloric valve will start to open releasing that food to the small intestine.

Drinking fluids during this time will speed up the process...... think washing the food through at a faster pace than if no liquid was consumed.

Also drinking fluids will speed the food up going through the top part of your small intestine where satiety still can be recognized.

I tend to feel some form of satiety for 3-4 hours and hunger at 5 hours is there but minimal.

So, in a nutshell "for me" delaying the resumption of drinking fluids for a longer amount of time than generally recommended, increases my duration of satiety greatly.

This is probably a technique for those further out that are really in touch with how the pyloric valve works.

This may be a part of Pyloric Valve 110 as I have a compliment eating strategy for the pyloric valve also.

Thanks for the information. I have a question though. Earlier I was at a restaurant and the food was very spicy and I drank a few sips of water to cool down my tongue, did I cause the food to go through faster than it should?

It depends on what you ate and how much, but my guess is not. Once you eat enough dense protein to close your pyloric valve any liquid you consume needs to be counted as volume.

That's why soups with meat in them are tough to judge.

Thank you. I ate 2 bites of Cantonese chicken and my mouth was on fire. After that I just ate the broth of my egg drop soup.

I wrote a slightly snarky comment...but decided that maybe this board doesn't need more drama.  I, for one, really enjoyed it and made myself laugh.  That's going to have to be good enough for now.  Just don't forget to remind people to listen to the professionals as professionals (as we all know) always know best.  If there are differences in plans that you can drive a truck through, well, that's just because they are all equally good.  That's all I've got.

I too drink right until I eat and do not drink for at least a full hour, often much longer for the same reason you mentioned.

I was gonna snark out also...... took the high road so the message didn't get diluted.

I'm in the same camp. I drink right up till eating. It's how I enjoy ****tails and dinner at goal. After, I am too full for fluids. I wait usually at least an hour before drinking. One other thing: Some digestion begins in the stomach. By not flushing out foods, you give your smaller stomach a longer time to do its work to help extract vitamins and nutrients. Yes, I do know that mostly occurs in the small intestine, but the food is prepped for the small intestine when we chew it and it further broken down by the acid in our stomach.

Yup yup...... this is how we fit better into social situations also, ****tail hour (socializing and drinking some form of fluid).

This is really interesting and I'm going to see if it works for me, too. Thanks for posting this!

Fascinating - thanks for sharing this.  I was told to also drink up until I eat.  We were told to resume drinking 30-45 minutes after.  Depending upon what I ate (how dense the protein), I have begun waiting 45 mins to an hour and feel much better and more satisfied.
