Looking for skirts

I've come to the conclusion that pants suck for my changing body.  Seriously, I hate them.  My current pair, for example, fits wonderfully in the waist, but through the crotch, rise, and hips you could probably drive a VW Minibus.  So I'm giving up and changing to skirts.  It's the only way.

I've found some great looking one size fits all-type skirts from Lotus Traders (both on Amazon and their site) but I was wondering if you all had any other suggestions?  I figure the one size fits all ones would be best since they'll last through a number of inches instead of needing to be replaced every few months.

And argh, on the topic of clothing.. I'm fine with most things but gym clothing is going to be the bane of my existence.  I need good fitting bras for exercise, but they're so expensive!!  I'm sorely tempted to buy one and just wa**** every day.  Of course, then I'm wasting money on water. :P  Maybe I can get away with two and do laundry every other day.  Wearing them multiple times between washing is not an option since I get gross and smelly when I work out!

Gwen, take a look at http://www.herroom.com/ for the bras. I actually found one that fit for the first time in years.

There's also http://closet.gwynniebee.com/account/login?checkout_url=http%3A%2F%2Fcloset.gwynniebee.com%2F.

I have a Gwynnie Bee account but I've really only gotten dresses from them.  I didn't think about seeing if I liked their skirts.  I seem to recall most were too professional for me, but I'll check again.

Thanks for the herroom rec, I'll check them out!  I love, love, love my current sports bras, they're Elomi Energise and AMAZING.  But they're getting too big and starting to dig into me and they're expensive :(

What size are the bras???  I'm in the market and my everyday Elomi bra is AMAZING!

I use Gwynnie Bee. I've gotten blouses and dresses from them, but no skirts as of yet. What I've gotten I've loved, and I love I can just "downsize" when my size drops.

As far as workout bras go, I bought these very lightweight nylon stretch bras at Walmart for about $3 a piece. I'm a D, and they do well to hold me in place, and at that price I bought several.

Hi Gwen,

I have been having good luck at Maurice's and Target. My first profile pic is a before and after, and the skirt is from Target. Also, I know you have given up on jeans, but Maurice's has a cut called the Kaylee which I love. Have you thought about maxi dresses? I love them, too, and they sell a ton of them at Target.

Good luck and happy shopping!

My image consultant was really helpful with this. She recommended skirts for exactly the same reason. Other pieces of advice that she gave me or that I learned along the way -

  • keep in mind that you can modify up to two sizes by alterations, so that skirt can last you over a few sizes.
  • shop sales! I bought two of the same skirts on clearance at Talbots in different sizes that lasted me about 3-4 months between the two of them. They were $20 each. I bought a silk shell from the same sale for $11, threw the whole thing together with a $10 wool jacket from goodwill and presented at a meeting in front of executives in London last fall.
  • It's possible to keep your wardrobe fresh by having good, solid, well fitting basics (whether they are pants or skirts) and some interesting accessories that you can change out seasonally and inexpensively.
  • buy a size small/tight if you do buy something. That required a complete mindshift on my part.
  • It may seem counterintuitive but buy the best quality clothing you can - it will be easier to alter, and it will have a better shape even as you lose. I was buying Talbots and Von Maur on clearance for prices at/below Target.
  • Well-fitting clothing DOES make you look and feel slimmer. Don't let things go too long before switching out.
  • With regards to bras, I have three that I rotate through, plus some sports bras (from Target).
  • There is something intensely rewarding about being able to fit your entire wardrobe in a single carryon suitcase and know that you have the opportunity to rebuild it.

You can check out thredUp for some skirts (or basically anything minus undies). It's an online thrift/consignment store & they have loads of skirts. They have fun, casual skirts all the way to business & dressy in a lot of different sizes & the prices are pretty darn good.

As for bras.... maybe try two & febreeze them between wearings so maybe you can wash them every other time you wear it?

I really like Old Navy activewear.  Their sports bras are pretty good (although my boobs have shrunk to nothing, so I don't need the support I used to) and they are not very expensive.  I actually think they are running a sale on workout clothes over there.

I have been spending a fortune on workout clothes.  I can't wear pants that are too big when running b/c then I jiggle too much.  Plus I feel so much better when I look good when I'm working out :)

I also love Fabletics - but they are a bit pricey.
