Question about eating/drinking to retain protein for as long as possible.

I talked with my NUT on Wendesday and asked her if it was OK for me to eat right after I drink something. She said "No, you want to wait at least 20 minutes after drinking to eat; and 20 minutes after eating before you drink anything.

Here's my question, which might sound dumb, but since the protein shake is a liquid, you still should wait 20 minutes after drinking water to drink the protein shake, right? And then wait 20 minutes after you finish the shake to drink more water, correct? Or since the shake is liquid, can you drink water right before you drink the shake and more right after if you want it?

I know I am splitting hairs, but I want to make sure. I have been treating the protein shakes just like solid foods in regards to drinking water before and after...

it is more important with solid foods you do not want to flush the food out of your stomach the longer its in there the less you want to  eat more it takes to stomach 20 minutes to sent a message to your brain that it is full that way it is best to eat very slowly

I was told not to drink 20 minutes before and 1 hour after and it works well with me

Not drinking 30-60 minutes before or after a meal applies to solid foods and not liquids.

Shakes are liquids, not solid food.  You can drink as close to a shake as you want.

I pretty much drink right up to eating because the pyloric valve is open then and liquids go straight through.  Then I wait 30-60 minutes after eating to drink again.

Thanks for the clarification. It all is a bit confusing at times.

Would you consider going back and questioning your NUT about the reason for waiting the 20 min. before eating after you drink?  The liquid goes right through the pyloric valve and I have found no particular value in waiting to eat.  Now, I do wait at least 45 min and sometimes much longer to eat after drinking, but I drink up to about five minutes before eating.  Check to see what the reasoning might be for waiting.  I would be curious to hear the explanation.  :)

I was told 30 min. prior, non during eating , and 1 hour after eating. I guess every center is different.

Yes they are.  My NUT said ok to drink right up until first bite of solid food.  Then wait 30-60 minutes.
