I went for my 3 week post op checkup last Thursday  and the Dr said he wants me to cut out all protein shakes  and get my 60 gms of protein  in with food. I told him that I enjoy my protein  shakes  and he said no, because they can cause weight stalls .  Hmmm. I think he was just saying that because I had complained about not losing anything in a whole week. What do yall think?

How many shakes are you having?  What kind?  What, exactly, are you consuming on a daily basis?

Stalls are totally normal, so I personally wouldn't worry as long as I was sticking to my plan. And at 4 weeks out, I definitely needs 2 shakes a day.

Is that all you're consuming?  If you're eating those and regular meals, I can see why the surgeon says you should cut back on the shakes.

No, a premier protein around 10 am. Then chicken broth for lunch, another protein shake around 2 or 3 and maybe s very small dinner like a couple of table spoons of baked tilapia and a table spoon of veggie.

If I dont do a protein shake for lunch I will have a slice of turkey lunch meat wrapped around a pickle and save my shake for after my walk

At three weeks out I would have had trouble getting all my protein in without shakes or powder supplement.  I still have one for breakfast every morning.  Stalls are inevitable for all of us.  I hadn't heard that they are a result of protein shakes.  Did you ask why?  Is it related to calorie intake?  I am curious.

no i didnt ask him , why. I did tell him that the shakes im drinking are  only 5 carbs and less than 3 gms of fat. i see him again on the 16th and will ask him why.  and I am still drinking atleast 1 a day, but not getting my protein in with food.

If you are eating the same as you would despite having a protein shake then it could cause a stall.

A problem with some surgeons is that they think they know nutrition and sometimes they do not.  My office the surgeon would come in and tell me to eat things like a bagel w/ a slice of ham for breakfast then the nutritionist would come in and tell me to ignore the surgeon.  I'm sure some surgeons understand the nutrition just as well as people that specialize in it, but some do not.

I don't typically say ignore your doctor, but if you need protein shakes to get in your protein -- I'd say go for it.  If you are having trouble feeling satisfied with low calories then focus on dense protein.

I am over a year out and still have a protein shake most days for breakfast.

thanks so much. there is no way i can get my protein in with solid food only.  i never eat breakfast. usually have a premier protein around 10, then chicken broth for lunch, a syntrax or another premier protein around 3 and then a very small dinner. 2 tablespoons of fish and 1 tbsp on veggie.

My NUT told me to expect to need a shake per day until I'm about one year post-op. I don't absolutely need one now, but I still drink one most days because I like them. I most assuredly needed them at one month post-op - there's not a chance I would have met my protein quota with food alone at that point. That being said, not all protein shakes are created equal; some are very high in sugar (I drink Premier protein which has very few carbs). A week 3 stall is totally, completely normal and almost everyone goes through a stall at week 2-3 (which I would hope that your surgeon would know!!). I don't think it's shake-induced.

I do think protein BARS on the other hand can totally cause stalls. Even ones like Quest that have low "net" carbs.
