Pureed Food Stage
Hi! I'm just about 2 weeks post surgery and still feeling really good! It is still surreal that I really took this step!
I'll be entering the pureed food stage Monday. Can anyone point me in the right direction - where can I get ideas for pureed food options? I know I need to have meats, but the thought of pureeing a meat kinda gags me. How exactly did you puree your meats? What did you do? What did you puree? I want to make sure my protein is high enough. I was told I could also only puree the following veggies: carrots, sweet potatoes, hubbard squash (?), and beets. No fibrous veggies.
I'm also transitioning to 3 "meals" and 2 high protein snacks a day. I figured Greek yogurt is a good high protein snack. Other ideas?
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!
Here are the foods I ate -- https://www.myvsg.net/2-uncategorised/142-pureed-food-i-ate
I used a Ninja prep cup or a stick blender to blend everything. For meats, I used recipes where the meats were in small pieces already - I wouldn't have tried to puree a whole chicken breast!

The big thing is don't puree much! From experience and I am male, you don't need much and that is good. My surgeon had me do 1 cup of skim milk mixed with Carnation instant breakfast as a good snack... gives you about 20 grams of protein and you can use the chocolate no sugar added. Don't use any of the sugar Carnation instant breakfasts. It was a nice break from just straight skim milk and vanilla... I got very very tired of vanilla flavored everything.
Refried beans are awesome, try to get fat free or low fat refried beans... you can add a little taco sauce to them if you can tolerate the spice..... I loved that as a good meat replacement. YOu can add broth to the beans if you need it smoother or add boiled chicken to it to get more meat in....
I know a lot of people don't like this but Braunsweiger or liverwurst is pretty blended and you can add a little broth to it if it is not pureed enough for you. I like liverwurst and that worked for me.

I haven't had any meat since surgery. I'm in pureed right now and my typical day usually involves 2 protein shakes (breakfast and snack), 4 oz cottage cheese for lunch, and blended soup for dinner. Sometimes I get in a yogurt snack or a SF popsicle as an extra snack. With that diet I usually get around 70 grams of protein.
Try pinterest for recipes. I have found a lot of great soup recipes. Plus baked ricotta is AWESOME. Eggface has a great recipe on her blog.
The trick for me was to puree the meat with a flavorful sauce -- no****er or broth -- and then heat it up in the microwave. Sometimes I added a little cheese to melt on top. When you do it that way, it tastes like a casserole and not something gross like baby food or Little Friskies canned. I used all kinds of meats and sauces (those flavored packets of tuna were especially good). Some of my favorite combos are listed below, but it all really depends on what appeals to you:
--garlic herb tuna & marinara sauce
--roast chicken breast with bbq sauce & cheddar cheese
--ranch tuna w/ low fat ranch dressing & parmesan cheese
--roast turkey breast with peanut satay sauce & jack cheese
--shrimp with remoulade & peccorino cheese
--ground bison with steak sauce & roquefort cheese
--sardines with curry sauce and gruyere cheese
--sweet & spicy tuna with sriracha mayo & pepper jack cheese
Good luck to you!
