I am 37 years old. My biggest fear in life is dying young. My mother died when she was 46. In fact no woman in my family has lived past 50. I have to do something about my weight soon. I am so ready to have surgery and get on with the rest of my life.
My main interests are homeschooling, sewing and reading. I also help take care of a 79 year old woman which I throughly enjoy. I have a 9 year old daughter and a 17 (18 in May) year old son.

23 March: First appt with the nutritionist is tomorrow! Wish me luck!

14 April: Met with surgeon! Wonderful man! I would reccomend him highly to anyone in the area. Surgery date is May 24th!! Started taking vitamins and upping the protien. Since I started taking a new pain med, I have been able to increase my walking and am up to 2 miles a day. Other appts. this month are: echocardiogram, chest x-ray, cardiologist, anestiologist, ultrasound of gall bladder, endoscope pre op and then procedure. whew!

April 20: I am an Aunt!!!! My sister had a baby girl on the 19th!! She is beautiful!!!
On the 20th I went to the cardiologist (sp) and found out I didn't need to see him because I saw one at the Naval Hospital here in Jacksonville. I found out I have a small heart murmur. It showed up on the Echocardiogram. Those are so cool. After the guy explained what I was looking at, I saw my heart valves doing their job, and the blood flowing through and everything.
Did my pre-admitting stuff for the endoscopy and the surgery. Had blood work done. Big day. Endoscopy is Tuesday.

May 3rd: Had the endoscopy today. It was a piece of cake! The nurses and other staff at Carteret General Hospital Day Surgery were wonderful. They really put me at ease. Thank you to the ladies on the message board who calmed my fears in my post. I did not talk to the Dr. afterward, but my husband did. He said they biopsied something and I have to go back for some antibiotics.

21 days till surgery. Can't wait!!

May 14th: Only 9 days till my open RNY and I'm getting just a little nervous. I wish I knew when I would be able to get around again, and do stuff like weed the garden and walk the dogs. It is the "not knowing" part I can't stand!
Also, I have been hearing stories about having the post-op drain removed. I have heard it is very painful and they do not numb you before hand. Just one more thing to worry about!

May 24th: well today is the day! I am so very very nervous. I know this will all be worth it in the long run. I used to say I was not afraid of pain, but now that I think about it, I guess I am!! I will update as soon as I am able! Good luck everybody!

August 16th; I have not been able to update due to computer problems, but I'm finally back! I am 12 weeks out today and have lost 50 pounds. I feel good!
I had some trouble in the beginning when I first introduced food, but it passed as it always does and now I am eating pretty well. I cannot emphasize chewing enough! Chew chew chew your food, until there is nothing left to chew, then swallow!
For recovery during the first two weeks, I reccomend people rent a lift recliner! What a luxury, especially if you had the open procedure. Also a raised potty seat is a great item to have.
I had a bout of post-op diarrhea, shuffling to the bathroom every 20 minutes. I "cured" it by mixing sugar free fat free yogurt into orange crystal light. I think I drank that twice.
Our post op diet given to us by the nutritionist is strict. Basically low carb. Don't tell her, but I ate 2/3 of a taco supreme from taco bell yesterday! One-time thing, really! The greasiness of it did not settle with me very well.
I'll be back soon!
September 12th:
I am down 62 pounds. I feel great! Saw Dr. Way today and he said everything looks good. I need to be more vigilant about the B12 shots, that month sure goes by quickly. I really feel terrific, I would do this all over again. I feel so good to be able to go into any store and buy regular clothes, no more plus sizes for me. Thank you God, because I know the success is His.

Hi, it has been a while. Time flies when you are shrinking!

I am down 75 pounds since surgery on May 24th. The loss seems slow to me, since a friend of mine who had the same procedure 5 weeks before me lost 120 pounds in 5 months. She is doing great too!

I am in a loose 16, but just can't afford to go out and buy clothes every time I need new size, so I make do. Luckily I sew some, so I can take in simple skirts and button-up shirts. I hope to get clothes for Christmas! I used to hate shopping, but now I love it, but don't have the money!!

I had a blockage a few weeks ago, I was unable to get any food or water down for three days, needless to say I was badly dehydrated by the time I went to the doctor, but my surgeon is Mr. Wonderful and he came right in and fixed me right up. No biggie, just call the Dr. as soon as you suspect something is amiss!!

I am struggling lately with candy! I do not dump on anything! I can eat as much candy as I want, granted it is not much, but I shouldn't be eating any!
My advice, if you are new, don't even tempt fate and "try" eating sweets!

Getting in protien has not been a problem since I found Myopro at GNC. It was reccomended to me by a weight lifting friend, but I was hesitant to try it since I don't like that stuff. But this stuff is pretty good. One scoop mixes is 4 oz. of water, so it is low in volume, for 22 grams of protien. I get the banana cream flavor, but I want to try the chocolate next.

This past Halloween I went on a hay ride with my daughter. I would have never done that before the weight loss. She was happy and so was I. I even jumped out of the back of the wagon when it was over!
All in all, I'm doing great!
See you soon!!

Hi everybody! Dec. 30, 2005

I am now down to 175. And I have been here for over a month! More advice on sweets, don't eat them! No matter what!! I have fallen back into bad eating habits and am using the New Year as a springboard to get out of them. I am motivated to lose the last 25 pounds and hope to do so by my anniv. date in May. I can eat anything now and that is my downfall! Note to pre-ops, it is possible to to eat too much and not lose weight!
On the bright side I get more exercise than ever before. I can run, swing, and ride bikes with my kids and that gives me such joy.
See ya next year!

I am not good at this updating stuff! I am doing great! I am down to 158 and still losing. I can wear a size 12 pants, and a medium shirt. Best of all I can run, climb the monkey bars and suing with my daughter. What a gift. I have decided to stop eating meat. I have a hard time swallowing it, and I live in fear of it getting stuck! So, No more meat forme. My daughter is already a vegetarian and has been for a few years, (she's 10) we already buy many meat substitutes, and I drink a protien drink every day, so protien will not be an issue. It will be healthier for me and a motivating for my daughter. Maybe in the future we may even go vegan. Before surgery, I could never leave out a food group, because I was so addicted to food! But now that is no longer an issue, I can make choices about what I would like to try, instead of what I feel like I gotta have RIGHT NOW!!!

Hope everybody had a nice day! Drop me a line!

Just wanted to add, down one more pound to 157!!!!

May 24, 2006

Today is my one year anniversary. Alot has changed in a year. I am thankful for it! I waver between 157 and 160 pounds. I would like to get to an even 150, and I think I probably will over the summer, if I stop making homade bread! I love that stuff!

I have not followed my Dr.'s advice, and I eat whatever I want. I know when I stop doing that, I will lose the rest of the weight. But, like many have said, it is not brain surgery, it is gastric surgery. He cannot change my brain, or stop my cravings.

My advice to those approaching WLS, take it one day at a time and do NOT compare yourself to others. Follow your Dr.s advice to the letter. He does not tell you to avoid sugar because he is a meany, he does it because it truly is the best way to go. So listen!
Now, I'm off to take my own advice! Bye!
Mary
