I've been overweight since I was 8 years old and became obese at 12 (gained over 30 lbs in three months right after I started my periods despite increased excercise and no change in eating habits at this time).  No diets have ever worked short of starving myself...also, keep in mind that I only lost 7lbs on the starvation diet.  Despite changing my diet and exercise habits, I am not able to not gain weight.

Bet that sounds terribly familiar to most people reading this!  And now for the gory parts for the ladies out there:

I have had major 'girl' issues for the past 10 years and was finally diagnosed with PCOS last year.  I was misdiagnosed for 6 years before that; despite suspecting this and begging my gynecologist to investigate this, I wasn't given an ultrasound until I had collapsed from blood loss during a hemorragic episode (caused by PCOS, mind you).

I was 21 at the time of this diagnosis and doctors told me that I needed to try to lose weight but would probably be unsuccessful in my attempts.  They just gave me birth control pills (which I had already taken in the past and they really didn't help much) and told me that there was nothing that could be done.  To be honest, it felt like they were just giving up and not considering any other alternatives except for a lifetime on BC pills.

I left that hospital and moved to DC where I got a new doctor who tried Metformin (this has just made me sick and while I did get a period, it lasted for 3.5 months...no regularity with this attempt).  I decided to look into the weight loss surgery options, found out that I do qualify for WLS, saw that all doctors thought that this would help with the PCOS.  I thought about it and figured that I'd give it a go.
