I have finally won my fight with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey - Horizon Direct Access. My wonderful surgeon, Dr. Mehta, has confirmed my surgery date of June 25, 2003! Now that my fight with insurance has ended, I have a lot of free time to focus on the upcoming procedure. Unfortunately, now I'm nervous and second-guessing my decision. However, I'm looking forward toward progress. Dave

David: My son weighed 442 at the time of his surgery on 5/5/03, BMI 61+. His Lap RNY went perfectly, no complications, took 3 hours. His recovery has been nothing short of remarkable, and he's doing great. The skills of the surgeon are what count in this. His surgeon has done Lap on people who were close to 600 pounds! Good luck.

DAVID, Do not be afraid of the open surgery....i had it done on 1/6/03 and with this procedure my physician was able to put a support band around the new pouch... this prevents the new pouch from being stretched...on top of all things...i had a problem with my bowel he found during the procedure and i had a 15 inch incision and NOT ONCE did i ever feel any pain or discomfort and was only in the hospital 24 hours...i weighed 346 5"6 and now i weigh 209...it has been the best thing i have ever done for myself...good luck

David, I am a woman who weighed 478 and a BMI of 68 and I am 5 feet 10 inches tall. I had an lap rny done with no complications from the surgery and he did it under one and a half hours. I was considered high risk but doctor only does high risk people one day a week so he has time post op with them. I had a complication due to infection but it had nothing to do with the surgery. I wish you good luck with the procedure you chose. Judith Holtz

Hi David! My surgeon told me that I would qualify for a lap-rny because of the way I carried my weight. I have a bmi of 52 and am 310 at 5'5". He said if I carried alot of my weight in my stomach and not all over like I do that he would have to do an open. Hope this helps some, just sharing what I know. God bless!
