First Visit to PCP for WLS Referral

Sep 01, 2010

Yesterday, I spoke with my brand new PCP about a WLS referral. For two years I’ve had Anthem Blue Cross HMO, prior to that I had their PPO. I began researching various weight loss surgery options late last year when a friend mentioned that she was in the process of making the RNY leap. My first info session/seminar was with a group of doctors from the N.E.W. Program down in Orange County. They only presented the RNY, VSG, and LB as options. I was convinced that I wanted the vertical sleeve however, Blue Cross considers it “investigational” and therefore not covered. A friend suggested I check out the OH community which is where I read about the DS for the first time. It is strange that in all my research I had not come across this particular surgery. It seemed like surgeons were keeping it a secret.  Fast forward to the present and I am completely convinced that the duodenal switch is the surgery for me. The smaller stomach along with the malabsorption component and preserving the pyloric valve makes this surgery a hands-down winner.

My PCP says that WLS is a definite option for me and has sent off for the referral to see a surgeon. Although Dr Keshishian, a lap DS surgeon, is not listed as a member of my IPA, my PCP says that he will recommend him anyway. Right now I am really nervous that BlueCross will somehow deny my request for a referral. I am convinced that if I actually get the chance to consult with a surgeon then the actual surgery will be approved and I could be on my way to a brand new life.
