My decision to do this surgery didn't come from me at first.  I was seeing my doctor on a regular basis about my weight and the effects of being overweight.  After numerous attempts at loosing weight with dieticians, programs like Weight Watchers, Herbal Magic, and numerous blood tests to see if my thyroid was acting up, we finally came to the conclusion that I would definitely need more help.

My doctor suggested that I get Gastric Banding done back in August of 2008.  However I could not afford that type of surgery being that it is almost $20,000 dollars.  I proceeded then to look into different types of procedures myself and found one I thought would be a great benefit for me, it was called "Mini Gastric Bypass"  it is slightly different in the way the surgery is performed and how things are connected.  I liked the fact that this type of surgery was fully reversible and seemed to be less dangerous than the RNY..  So off to the Doctor I went with all my information and I ran it by him.  He was fully ready to back me and support my decision to do this type of surgery.  He fill out OHIP forms for the Out Of Country coverage and we sat and waited.

OHIP came back with a decision within 3 weeks, I received my registered letter just after 3 weeks.  I was approved but there was a catch......I was redirected to St. Joseph's in Hamilton Ontario.  I was approved to have it done here in Canada and I had to receive the full Gastric Bypass as they don't do the mini here in Canada.  At first this was upsetting to me, but after long thought about this I was actually very happy that I would not have to travel and that if down the road I needed to get to my surgeon quickly because of a problem, he was only an hour and a half away as opposed to 6 hours.

So begins my long journey with getting the surgery here in Canada.
