I know this area is supposed to be for others in support of me, but I am using it to inform everyone of the great Pre- and Post-Op Support that is available at Midstate Medical in Meriden, CT. Karen Darley is the Bariatric Program Coordinator. She was previously employed in the hospital as a Clinical Social Worker, but her talents and compassion for the obese have truly blossomed when she accepted this position full time. She really is the heart of the operation (get it..operation? ahem) If you have the slightest concern, you can feel confident in calling her and knowing she will be on top of it. She is also the initial psych evaluator for the program. It's amazing how she knows exactly what to look for that could be a potential problem for your recovery and success down the road.
She has liasons at the insurance companies that she communicates with constantly to make sure her interdisciplinary pre-op program is in line with what they will eventually accept for your approval. It seems there is a meeting a couple times of month just for us bariatrics--some with special speakers such as noted authors, plastic surgeons, and WLS grads.
She wrangles a group of physical/exercise therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, pharmacists, nurses and doctors all for us. If anything draws you to Midstate to seek out information on this procedure, let it be my trust and satisfaction in Karen Darley. Informational sessions are held usually around the first (maybe second) Tuesday of every month at night. You can check out the events page at www.midstatemedical.org
